Comprises Northumberland and Durham. Founded in 674 as an abbey by Saint Wilfrid of York. Eleven of the early bishops were saints. Suppressed during the confiscation of churches. Revived as the Vicariate Apostolic of Northern District on January 30, 1688. Elevated to the diocese of Hexham on September 29, 1850. Name changed to the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on May 23, 1861. Suffragan of the archdiocese of Liverpool. See also
