Jesuit missionary martyr. Born in 1601 in Anjou, France; died in 1642 in New York. Unable to join the Society of Jesus regularly, he volunteered his missionary services in Canada. He became the disciple and companion of Saint Isaac Jogues and remained with him until death. Goupil accompanied him to the Huron Mission, was captured by the Iroquois, suffered horrible tortures, and was killed. Before his death he pronounced the religious vows of the society in the presence of Father Jogues. Beatified on June 21, 1925; canonized on June 29, 1930.
