(1598-1680) Architect and sculptor, born Naples; died Rome. Skilled in painting, poetry, and sculpture, he won fame through his architectural work in Rome, notably the baldachinum and colonnade of Saint Peter's and the Scala Regia connecting the church with the Vatican. Among the best examples of his sculpture are the tomb of Countess Matilda and the statue of Saint Bibiana.
