Historian, born Quebec, Canada, 1809; died there, 1866. Having studied law, he was city clerk from 1844 until death. The first volume of his "Histoire du Canada" appeared in 1845, the second in 1846, and the third in 1848; this work although marred by unjust criticism of the doctrine and policy of the Church in its earlier editions is of considerable importance as a pioneering work in the field of Canadian history. By Garneau's request, later editions were revised by an ecclesiastic. His life and death were edifyingly Catholic.
