François de Montmorency Laval
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
First Bishop of Canada. April 30, 1623 in Montigny-sur-Avre, Normandy, France; died May 6, 1708 in Quebec, Canada. He studied under the Jesuits at La Fleche and Clermont, and was consecrated vicar Apostolic of New France on April 11, 1658, landing at Quebec the following year. He was deeply attached to the Jesuit and Recollect missionaries, and aided them by the vigorous struggle he made against the sale of liquor to the Indians. He organized a complete system of education, both literary and technical, and displayed his patriotism in procuring the creation of the Sovereign Council. On October 1, 1674Quebec was elevated to a diocese. Worn out by his zealous labors, Laval resigned his see on January 24, 1688. He was highly reputed for his sanctity, and in 1890 the cause of his canonization was introduced at Rome. He was beatified on June 22, 1980 by Pope John Paul II.
