(1795-1883) First Archbishop of Oregon City, born Saint Pierre, Quebec, Canada; died Portland, Oregon. Educated at the Seminary of Quebec, he was ordained, 1819, and went west as vicar-general and first missionary to the Oregon country, 1838. He was made vicar Apostolic and consecrated in Montreal, 1845, being named Archbishop of Oregon City, 1846. After 42 years of heroic labor in the Northwest, he resigned, 1880.
