Reigned from 526 to 530. Born Samnium, Italy; died Rome, Italy. As pope, in favor with Theodoric, Arian king of the Goths, he secured prestige for the Church. From Amalasuntha, the daughter of Theodoric, who succeeded her father, he obtained a confirmation of the custom exempting clerics from civiljurisdiction, and a gift of two Roman temples which he converted into churches. He opposed semi-Pelagianism with his "Capitula," taken from Scripture and the writings of the Fathers; they were later published as canons.
