Founded on May 18, 1721 as the archdiocese of Fagaras. Name changed to Fagaras e Alba Iulia on November 16, 1854. The Romanian Catholic Church suffered brutal persecution during the Communist era as the government sought to eliminate all evidence of an Eastern Church in communion with Rome. Priests and lay people were imprisoned, tortured, and executed, and parish property was confiscated. Elevated to a major archbishopric on December 16, 2005. Primary archdiocese of the Romanian Church United with Rome. Suffragen dioceses include

- Oradea Mare {Gran Varadino}
