City, Lydia, Asia Minor, capital of Proconsular Asia; one of the seven churches to whose bishop Saint John was commanded to write (Apocalypse 1). To the faithful chiefly in this city Paul addressed his letter "to the Ephesians." It became an archbishopric and is now a titular see.
