(c.585-633) Martyr, first Christian King of Northumbria, died Hatfield Chase, England. He was the son of Ella, King of Northumbria, but the usurper Ethelfrid kept him from his throne until his thirtieth year. He married as his second wife Ethelburga, sister of Eadbald, the Christian King of Kent. He was baptized at York, 627, by Saint Paulinus, and thenceforth showed himself zealous for the conversion of his people. The title martyr has been given to him because he was slain in conflict with the pagan king, Penda of Mercia, an enemy of the Faith. His relics were preserved at Whitby; head in Saint Peter's Church, York. Feast, October 12,.
