Physician and historian; born Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, February 27, 1797; died New York, New York, May 29, 1880. He graduated in medicine at Paris and settled in Montreal, but having been attainted of treason through his participation in a rebellion to secure popular rights, 1837, he fled to the United States and settled at Albany. After writing the "History of New Netherland," he was officially appointed to compile the documents bearing on New York State and colonial history. About 80 historical works have appeared under his name, chief among them "Documentary History of New York," "Documents relating to the Colonial History of New York."
