Ancient diocese in Scotland founded c.1155by King David I; first bishop, Lawrence, 1160; it comprised territory bounded on the north by the bishopric of Dunkeld, south by Glasgow and Saint Andrews, east by Dunkeld and Glasgow, west by Saint Andrews. The last pre-Reformation bishop was William Chisholm, 1564, later Bishop of Vaison, France. The cathedral of Dunblane was erected by David I, 1141, on the site of Saint Blane's monastery. In style of architecture it is Early Pointed excepting its tower which is Early Norman. At present it is used as the Presbyterian parish church.
