Priests who labored among the Catholic convicts in the Australian penal settlements. These convicts had been compelled to attend Protestant religious services until 1803, when Father James Dixon was permitted to exercise his clerical functions; under galling restrictions. In 1804Father Dixon's privilege was withdrawn and a period of persecution of Catholics began anew, and continued until 1820, the year of the arrival of Fathers Conolly and Therry.
