Reigned from May 7, 1342 to December 6, 1352. Born in 1291 at Castle of Maumont, Correze, France as Pierre Roger de Beaufort; died on at Avignon, France. He was a Benedictine, Archbishop of Sens, archbishop of Rouen, and was created cardinal in 1338. He purchased Avignon for the papacy, opposed Emperor Louis the Bavarian, and received the submission of the schismatical Friars Minor. Charitable and courageous, he gave asylum in Avignon to the Jews during the Black Death.
