Claude de La Colombière, Blessed
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(1641-1682) Born Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon, France; died Paray-le-Monial. He entered the Society of Jesus, 1659. In 1674 he was made superior of the Jesuits at Paray-le-Monial and there became the spiritual adviser of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. He was sent to England, 1676, as chaplain to the Duchess of York, later Queen of England. Even while at court he continued his missionary labors. He was later arrested in the Oates persecution and was imprisoned and banished from England, escaping death only because of his services to the English queen, and through the intervention of Louis XIV. The last two years of his life were spent at Lyons and Paray-Ie-Monial, as spiritual director to the Jesuit novices. His works include six volumes of sermons, letters, and moral treaties. Beatified, 1920. Relics at Paray-Ie-Monial. Feast, February 15,.
