Charles Russell Lawyer

Jurist and statesman. Nephew of Charles William Russell. Born on November 10, 1832 in Newry, Ireland; died on August 10, 1900 in London, England. He practised law in Ireland with great success, and was called to the English Bar in 1859. In 1872 he became a Queen's Counsel. His great ability made him the foremost lawyer of his times. His greatest effort was his speech in defense of Parnell, before the Parnell Commission. In 1893 he represented Great Britain in the Behring Sea arbitration. In 1894 he was made lord of appeals, and raised to the peerage for life; he was also appointed lord chief justice. He represented England on the Venezuelan Boundaries Commission in 1899. His Catholic faith alone prevented him from being appointed lord chancellor in the Liberal government of 1892, such an appointment being contrary to the provisions of the Act of Settlement.
