Priest, inventor of the sign alphabet for the instruction of the deaf and dumb, born Versailles, France, 1712; died Paris, France, 1789. His success with two deaf and dumb pupils led him to found at his own expense a school for the education of others so afflicted. His sign system laid the foundation of all systematic instruction of the deaf and dumb.
