(642-716) Benedictine abbot of Wearmouth and Jarrow; died Langres, France. Of Saxon nobility, he became a monk and was ordained at Ripon. He was prior at Wearmouth and deputy at Jarrow, under Saint Benedict Biscop, whom he succeeded as abbot (690). Among his numerous improvements was his augmentation of the libraries of both monasteries. In his last journey to Rome, prior to which he had resigned his abbacy, he carried as a gift to the pope the famous "Codex Amiatinus," written (690-716) at Wearmouth or Jarrow, containing the oldest text of Saint Jerome's Vulgate, and now in the Laurentian Library, Florence.
