Antipope (974,984-985), born Rome, Italy; died there. A cardinal-deacon, he was appointed by Crescentius, in opposition to Benedict VI, whom he murdered. He was banished by Otto, 974, but returned, 983, after the emperor's death, imprisoned John XIV, and reinstated himself. He died, probably by violence, after a reign of less than two years.
