Only once applied to a house: 'painted with vermilion.' Jeremiah 22:14 . Jezebel 'painted her eyes,' as 2 Kings 9:30 should read. Israel is compared to a lewd woman who painted her eyes. Ezekiel 23:40 . "Thou rentest thy face with painting" in Jeremiah 4:30 is 'enlarging the eyes.' The eyelids and eyebrows were painted with antimony or some other pigment, which made the eyes look larger. Small bottles and the short sticks which were used to apply the moistened powder have been found in the tombs of Egypt.
