Hallowed he thy name. Matthew 5:9. For he must increase, and I must decrease. John 3:30. Christ’s intercession. John 17:1-19. Holy Father, keep them through thine own name, sanctify them through thy truth. For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
We must not only plead our own cause in our prayers, but have the cause and the glory of God at heart; intercede for all without distinction, and carefully avoid that uncharitable narrowness of spirit, so common to all parties, by which we seek only our own, and selfishly labour to erect, as it were, a new kingdom of God, even on the ruins of others, and at their expense. But this is not the right communion of all saints in the whole universe.
Many are we now, and one,
We who Jesus have put on;
Names, and sects, and parties fall,
Thou, O Christ, art all in all!
Move, and actuate, and guide,
Divers gifts to each divide;
Placed according to thy will,
Let us all our work fulfil.
One the Father is with thee;
Knit as in like unity:
Make us, O uniting Son,
One, as thou and he are one.
