Exodus 13

Gann's Commentary on the BibleGann on the Bible

Verse 18

Red Sea -- See 88-B-OT - EX "Exodus" for Biblical Archaeology Review article

"Red Sea or Reed Sea?" A great article. cf. 1 Kings 9:26

Red Sea -- Exodus 10:19; Exodus 13:18; Exodus 15:4; Exodus 15:22; Exodus 23:31;

Sea -- Exodus 10:19; Exodus 13:18; Exodus 14:2; Exodus 14:9; Exodus 14:16; Exodus 14:21; Exodus 14:22; Exodus 14:23; Exodus 14:26; Exodus 14:27; Exodus 14:28; Exodus 14:29; Exodus 15:1; Exodus 15:4; Exodus 15:8; Exodus 15:10; Exodus 15:19; Exodus 15:21; Exodus 15:22; Exodus 20:11; Exodus 23:31;

Passages to consider: Jeremiah 49:21;

Numbers 21:14; Numbers 21:25; Deuteronomy 1:40; Deuteronomy 2:1; Judges 11:16; Numbers 3:38;

  • · Joshua 2:10; Joshua 4:23; Joshua 24:6; Deuteronomy 11:4; Psalms 106:7; Psalms 106:9; Psa 106.22; Psalms 136:13-15; Nehemiah 9:9

Heinrich Brugsch in 1958 was apparently the first to develop a comprehensive coherent theory of the "Reed Sea" including the alleged connection between the Biblical yam sup and p3-twf(y) (pronounce approximately pi thoof) of the Egyptian texts. These Egyptian texts form the principal pillar of the Reed Sea hypothesis.

(In Exodus 2:3-5, the baby Moses is hidden from Pharaoh who has threatened to kill all newborn Hebrew males; he is hidden among the suph (reeds) by the bank of the Nile. See als Isaiah 19:6.)
