1 Kings 11:29 — At that time - Probably after Jeroboam’s return from Egypt (see 1 Kings 11:40).The Shilonite - An inhabitant of Shiloh in Mount Ephraim, the earliest and most sacred of the Hebrew sanctuaries (Joshua 18:10; Jdg 18:31; 1 Samuel 4:3, etc.)
1 Chronicles 1:30 — Hadad here and in 1 Chronicles 1:50 is the well-known Syrian name, of which Hadar (margin) is an accidental corruption, consequent on the close resemblance between “d” (daleth) and “r” (resh) in Hebrew, the final letters of the two names.
Psalms 119:16 — I will delight myself in thy statutes - I will find my happiness in thy laws. See Psalms 1:2, note; Psalms 112:1, note.I will not forget thy word - I will not allow the world to crowd it out of my mind.
Lamentations 2 overview — This poem Lamentations 2:0 also divides itself like Lamentations 1:0 into two nearly equal portions; in Lamentations 2:1-10, the prophet describes the punishment which has fallen upon Zion; Lamentations 2:11-22 are a lamentation and a prayer.
Luke 9:18-26 — See the Matthew 16:13-27 notes; Mark 8:27-38 notes.Luke 9:20The Christ of God - The “Anointed” of God. The “Messiah” appointed by God, and who had been long promised by him. See the notes at Matthew 1:1.
Acts 13:33 — the resurrection of Jesus. He does not say that every part of the promise had reference to his resurrection; but his being raised up completed or perfected the fulfillment of the promises which had been made respecting him.In the second psalm - Acts 13:7.Thou art my Son - This psalm has been usually understood as referring to the Messiah. See the notes on Acts 4:25.This day have I begotten thee - It is evident that Paul uses the expression here as implying that the Lord Jesus is called the Son of
Acts 7:56 — I see the heavens opened - A figurative expression, denoting that he was permitted to see “into” heaven, or to see what was there, as if the firmament was divided, and the eye was permitted to penetrate the eternal world. Compare Ezekiel 1:1.
1 Thessalonians overview — Introduction to 1 ThessaloniansSection 1. The Situation of ThessalonicaThessalonica was a city and sea-port of Macedonia. It was at the head of the bay Thermaicus, or the Gulf of Thessalonica, and was, therefore, favorably situated for commerce. It was on the great Egnatian
Revelation 1:5 — And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness - See the notes on Revelation 1:2. He is faithful in the sense that he is one on whose testimony there may be entire reliance, or who is entirely worthy to be believed. From him “grace and peace” are appropriately sought, as one who hears such a testimony, and as the first-begotten
1 Samuel 17:3 — (In the middle of the broad open valley 1 Samuel 17:2 is a deep trench 1 Samuel 17:3 with vertical sides, a valley within a valley: the sides and bed of the trench are strewn with water-worn pebbles. (Conder.))
1 Samuel 28:19 — Rather, “will deliver Israel also.” Saul had not only brought ruin upon his own house but upon Israel also; and when Saul and Jonathan fell the camp (not “host”) would be plundered by the conquerors 1 Samuel 31:8; 2 Samuel 1:10.
1 Samuel 3:14 — See the marginal references. The sin of the sons of Eli could not be purged by the appointed sacrifices of the Law. In blessed contrast with this declaration is the assurance of the New Testament 1 John 1:7; Acts 13:39.
1 Samuel 7:16 — Gilgal - It is uncertain whether Gilgal in the valley of the Jordan, or the modern Jiljulieh, the Gilgal of 2 Kings 2:1; 2 Kings 4:38, be meant; but far more probably the former (see 1 Samuel 11:14 and note).
2 Samuel 23:23 — David set him over his guard - “Made him of his privy council,” would be a better rendering. See 1 Samuel 22:14 note. This position, distinct from his office as captain of the Cherethites and Pelethites, is clearly indicated 1 Chronicles 27:34.
