1 Kings 15:18 — Left - Or, according to another reading, “found.” The wealthy condition of the temple treasury is sufficiently indicated in 1 Kings 15:15. Compare 2 Chronicles 15:18.Asa’s conduct in calling Benhadad to his aid, condemned by the seer Hanani 2 Chronicles 16:7, cannot, of course, be justified; but there was much to excuse it. An alliance, it appears, had existed between Abijam
Psalms 89:15 — Blessed is the people - Happy is their condition. See the notes at Psalms 1:1.That know the joyful sound - That hear that sound. DeWette explains this of the call to the festivals and offerings, Leviticus 23:24; Numbers 10:10; Psalms 27:6. That is, says he, those who honor and worship God. The Hebrew word - תרועה terû‛âh
Isaiah 27:5 — God for a refuge.Take hold of my strength - That is, let the enemy take hold of me to become reconciled to me. The figure here is taken probably from the act of fleeing to take hold of the horns of the altar for refuge when one was pursued (compare 1 Kings 1:50; 1 Kings 2:28).That he may make peace with me - With me as the guardian of the vineyard. If this were done they would be safe. And he shall make peace with me - That is, even the enemy of me and of my vineyard “may” be permitted to make peace
Matthew 21:2 — Go into the village over against you - That is, to Bethphage See the notes at Matthew 21:1.Ye shall find an ass tied ... - In Judea there were few horses, and those were chiefly used in war. People seldom employed them in common life and in ordinary journeys. The ass, the mule, and the camel are still most used in Eastern countries. To
Luke 1:55 — here referred to is that respecting the Messiah which was now about to be fulfilled; but there is no doubt that there was also included the promises respecting all the other mercies which had been conferred on the children of Israel. See Genesis 22:17-18.Forever - These words are to be referred to the preceding verse - “in remembrance of His mercy” forever, “as he spake,” etc. They denote that the “mercy of God” manifested to His people should be had in everlasting remembrance. There is a striking
Luke 1:69 — the great power of the rhinoceros or unicorn is manifested by the use of a single horn of great “strength,” placed on the head near the end of the nose. When the sacred writers, therefore, speak of great strength they often use the word “horn,” Psalms 148:14; Deuteronomy 33:17; Daniel 7:7-8; Daniel 7:21. The word salvation, connected here with the word “horn,” means that this “strength,” or this mighty Redeemer, was able to save. It is possible that this whole figure may be taken from the Jewish “altar.”
Ephesians 1:14 — Which is the earnest of our inheritance - On the meaning of this, see the notes at 2 Corinthians 1:22.Until the redemption - see the notes at Romans 8:23. The meaning here is, we have the Holy Spirit as the pledge that that shall be ours, and the Holy Spirit will be imparted to us until we enter on that inheritance.Of the purchased possession - Heaven,
Ephesians 5:6 — the customs which had been long practiced, and that there could be no harm still in their indulgence. Not a few philosophers endeavored, as is well known, to defend some of these practices, and even practiced them themselves; see the notes on Romans 1:0. It required, therefore, all the authority of an apostle to convince them, that however plausible were the arguments in defense of them, they certainly exposed those who practiced them to the wrath of God.For because of these things cometh the wrath
Colossians 3:14 — And above all these things - Over, or upon all these things; compare the notes at Ephesians 6:16.Charity - Love. Notes, 1 Corinthians 13:1.Which is the bond of perfectness - The bond of all perfection; the thing which will unite all other things, and make them complete; compare the parallel place in Ephesians 4:3. The idea seems to be that love
1 Thessalonians 2:12 — That ye would walk worthy of God ... - That you would live in such a manner as would honor God, who has chosen you to be his friends; notes, Ephesians 4:1. A child “walks worthy of a parent” when he lives in such way as to reflect honor on that parent for the method in which he has trained him; when he so lives as to bring no disgrace on him, so as not to pain his heart by misconduct, or so as to give
Titus 2:11 — For the grace of God - The favor of God, shown to the undeserving; see the notes at Romans 1:7.That bringeth salvation - Margin, to all men, hath appeared. That is, in the margin, “the grace which brings salvation to all men has been revealed.” The marginal reading is most in accordance with the Greek, though it will bear either construction.
1 Peter 4:5 — impunidad. Son culpables en esto de un agravio equivocado y deben responder por ello a Dios. Eso está listo para juzgar - Es decir, "quién está preparado para juzgar" - τῷ ἑτοίμως ἔχοντι tō hetoimōs echonti. Vea la frase utilizada en Hechos 21:13; "Estoy listo no solo para ser atado, sino también para morir en Jerusalén". 2 Corintios 12:14; "La tercera vez estoy listo para venir a ti". Compare la palabra "listo" - ἑτοιμος hetoimos - en Mateo 22:4, Mateo 22:8; Mateo 24:44; Mateo 25:1;
1 John 3:22 — And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him - If we are truly his children, and ask in a proper manner. See the notes at Matthew 7:7. Compare Mark 11:24; Luke 11:9; Luke 18:1 ff; John 14:13; Joh 15:7; 1 John 5:14. The declaration here made must be understood with these limitations: (1)That we ask in a proper manner, James 4:3; and, (2)That the thing asked shall be such as will be consistent for
Revelation 19:12 — His eyes were as a flame of fire - See the notes on Revelation 1:14.And on his head were many crowns - Many diadems, indicative of his universal reign. It is not said how these were worn or arranged on his head - perhaps the various diadems worn by kings were in some way wreathed into one.And he had a name written
