Exodus 19:5 — stands, taken out of the pagan world and consecrated to God, as His slaves, subjects, and children, determines their privileges, and is the foundation of their duties. The same principle applies even in a stronger sense to the Church. See Acts 20:28; 1 Corinthians 6:20; 1 Peter 2:9.All the earth is mine - It was a point of great practical importance, to impress upon the Jews that their God was no mere national Deity. Compare Deuteronomy 10:14; Psalms 24:1.
1 Kings 6:38 — Seven years - More exactly, “seven years and six months,” since Zif was the second, and Bul the eighth month. 1 Kings 6:1.
1 Kings 7:35 — A round compass - A circular elevation, half a cubit high, rather than a circular depression, half a cubit deep. Compare 1 Kings 7:29. The “ledges” and “borders” of the top of the base were its “hands” and its “panels.” These “hands,” distinct from the “shoulders” 1 Kings 7:30, were probably supports, adorned with engraved plates 1 Kings 7:36, either of the elevated circle
2 Kings 8:20 — Edom, which had been reduced by David 2Sa 8:14; 1 Kings 11:15-16, but had apparently revolted from Solomon 1 Kings 11:14, was again subjected to Judah in the reign of Jehoshaphat 2 Kings 3:8-26. The Edomites had, however, retained their native kings, and with them the spirit of independence. They
2 Chronicles 11:23 — Rehoboam’s wisdom was shown:(1) In dispersing his other sons instead of allowing them to remain together in Jerusalem, where they might have joined in a plot against Abijah, as Adonijah and his brothers had done against Solomon 1 Kings 1:5-10;(2) In giving his sons positions which
Ezra 3:7 — According to the grant - i. e., in accordance with the permission granted them by Cyrus to rebuild their temple Ezra 1:1-4.
Psalms 102:20 — Para escuchar el gemido del prisionero - Significado aquí, probablemente, los cautivos en Babilonia; aquellos que fueron retenidos allí como prisioneros y que fueron sometidos a tales dificultades en su largo cautiverio. Vea las notas en Salmo 79:11. Perder a los que están designados para la muerte - Margen, como en hebreo, "los hijos de la muerte". Compare las notas en Mateo 1:1. Esto puede significar aquellos que fueron condenados a muerte; aquellos que estaban enfermos y listos para morir;
Jeremiah 7:16 — They had reached that stage in which men sin without any sense of guilt (see 1 John 5:16).Neither make intercession to me - In Jeremiah 14:7-9 we have an intercessory prayer offered by Jeremiah, but not heard. The intercession of Moses prevailed with God Numbers 11:2; Numbers 14:13-20; Numbers 16:22, because the progress of the
Matthew 24:16 — the surrounding part of Judea. The mountains - The mountains of Palestine abound in caves, a safe retreat for those who are pursued. In all ages these caves have been the favorite places of robbers, and they were also resorted to by those in danger, 1 Samuel 13:6; 1 Samuel 22:1; 2 Samuel 23:13; Joshua 10:16. In those mountains they would be safe.
Luke 15:24 — Was dead - This is capable of two significations:“I supposed” that he was dead, but I know now that he is alive. He was “dead to virtue” - he was sunk in pleasure and vice. The word is not unfrequently thus used. See 1 Timothy 5:6; Matthew 8:22; Romans 6:13. Hence, to be restored to “virtue” is said to be restored again to life, Romans 6:13; Revelation 3:1; Ephesians 2:1. It is probable that this latter is the meaning here. See Luke 15:32.Was lost - Had wandered away
Acts 15:13 — James answered - James the Less, son of Alpheus. See the notes on Acts 12:1.Hearken unto me - This whole transaction shows that Peter had no such authority in the church as the papists pretend, for otherwise his opinion would have been followed without debate. James had an authority not less than that of Peter. It is possible
1 Samuel 1:15 — See 1 Samuel 1:2 and note. She means that wine was not the cause of her present discomposure, but grief of heart.
1 Samuel 31:11 — When the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead heard ... - See 1 Samuel 11:1-15. This is a touching and rare example of national gratitude.
