Ecclesiastes 6 overview The Preacher in this chapter contemplates the case of people to whom God gives wealth, honor, success, children, and long life, yet withholds from them the capacity of enjoyment, rest, permanence or contentment Ecclesiastes 6:1-9. What then is good for man to do, whose lot in life is so thoroughly subject to vanity? Ecclesiastes 6:10-12.
Song of Solomon 7 overview The Shulamite complies with the request of her attendants, and as she glides before them in the dance, they sing in further commendation of her beauty of form and grace of movement. The description in the original consists, like Song of Solomon 4:1-5, of five stanzas nearly coinciding with the verses in the text.
Jeremiah 50:15 Shout - i. e., spoken of the war-cry. So in Isaiah 42:13, where God is compared to a warrior, it is said He shall shout (the King James Version cry), i. e., raise the war-cry.Site hath given her hand - The sign of submission (compare 1 Chronicles 29:24 margin).Foundations - Or, buttresses. The Septuagint: “battlements.”
Ezekiel 20 overview The prophecies of this section Eze. 20–23 were delivered nearly a year after those of the former Ezekiel 8:1. Ezekiel in reply to other inquiries from the chieftains of the people, sets forth their national history, the national judgment, and the hope of divine mercy. This leads up to the prediction of the kingdom of the Messiah.
Ezekiel 25:8 Prophecies against Moab which lay south of Ammon, and shared Ammon’s implacable hostility to the children of Israel.Seir was close to Moab. Edom is identified with Mount “Seir” in Ezekiel 35:1-15; and “Seir” is therefore probably coupled with “Moab” here because, being near neighbors closely leagued together, they expressed a common exultation at Jerusalem’s fall.
Ezekiel 4:11 Water by measure - This probably corresponds to the water of affliction 1 Kings 22:27; Isaiah 30:20. The measure of the hin is variously estimated by Jewish writers. The sixth part of a hin will be according to one estimate about 610ths, according to another 910ths of a pint. The lesser estimate is more suitable here.
Ezekiel 40:3 The appearance of brass - Brightly shining.A line of flax - For measuring the ground plan.A measuring reed - For the walls (compare Jeremiah 31:38-39). To measure implied a separation for sacred purposes. The measurements are: (1) exact, to show that the promise is certain; (2) equal, to denote harmony; (3) vast, to mark majesty and grandeur.
Matthew 10:27 What I say to you in darkness ... - That is, in “secret,” in “private,” in “confidence. The private instructions which I give you while with me do you proclaim publicly, on the “house-top.” The “house-top,” the flat roof, was a public, conspicuous place. See 2 Samuel 16:22. See also the notes at Matthew 9:1-8.
Luke 1:30 Fear not, Mary - Do not be alarmed at this appearance of an angel. He only comes to announce to you good tidings. Similar language was addressed by an angel to Joseph. See the notes at Matthew 1:20.Thou hast found favour with God - Eminent favor or mercy in being selected to be the mother of the Messiah.
John 15:12 This is my commandment - The special law of Christianity, called hence “the new commandment.” See the notes at John 13:34.As I have loved you - That is, with the same tender affection, willing to endure trials, to practice self-denials, and, if need be, to lay down your lives for each other, 1 John 3:16.
Acts 13:25 And as John fulfilled his course - As he was engaged in completing his work. His ministry is called a course or race, that which was to be run, or completed. He said ... - These are not the precise words which the evangelists have recorded, but the sense is the same. See the John 1:20 note; Matthew 3:11 note.
Acts 13:31 And he was seen - See the notes at the end of Matthew. Many days - Forty days, Acts 1:3.Of them which came up - By the apostles particularly. He was seen by others; but they are especially mentioned as having been chosen for this object, to bear witness to him, and as having been particularly qualified for it.
Acts 9:37 Whom, when they had washed - Among most people it has been customary to wash the body before it is buried or burned. They prepared her in the usual manner for interment. In an upper chamber - See the notes on Acts 1:13. There is no evidence that they expected that Peter would raise her up to life.
