Esther overview — volume of Esther,” or simply “the volume.” In ancient times, it was always written on a separate roll, which was read entirely at the Feast of Purim. The Greek translators retained only “Esther,” which thus became the ordinary title among Christians.1. There is much controversy concerning the date of “Esther.” The extreme minuteness of the details and vividness of the portraits in “Esther” certainly suggest the hand of a contemporary far more decidedly than any occasional expressions suggest a composer
Leviticus 27:16 — Some part of a field of his possession - Rather, a part of the land of his inheritance.The seed thereof - i. e. the quantity of seed required to sow it properly. Thus the value of about 5 1/2 bushels (an homer) was about 6 pounds, 9 shillings, 2d. (50 shekels. See Exodus 38:24.)
Deuteronomy 22:5 — That which pertaineth unto a man - i. e. not only his dress but all that especially pertains distinctively to his sex; arms, domestic and other utensils, etc.The distinction between the sexes is natural and divinely established, and cannot be neglected without indecorum and consequent danger to purity (compare 1 Corinthians 11:3-15).
1 Corinthians 6:12 — admitting that they were lawful, yet a man ought not to be under the power of any improper indulgence, and should abandon any habit when it had the mastery. (3)That fornication was positively wrong, and against the very nature and essence of Christianity,1 Corinthians 6:13-20; 1 Corinthians 6:13-20.Are not expedient - This is the first answer to the objection. Even should we admit that the practices under discussion are lawful, yet there are many things which are not expedient; that is, which do not profit,
1 Thessalonians 4:17 — Entonces nosotros que estamos vivos - Aquellos que entonces estarán vivos; ver 1 Tesalonicenses 4:15. La palabra aquí traducida “entonces” (ἔπειτα epeita) no significa necesariamente que esto ocurra de inmediato. Marca correctamente la sucesión en el tiempo y significa "después, siguiente, siguiente en el orden de los eventos";
Judges 10:11 — (See the marginal references). The Israelites were delivered from the “Egyptians” at the Exodus; from the “Amorites” in the victories over Sihon, and Og, and the five kings of the Amorites Joshua 10:5; from the “children of Ammon” by Ehud; and from the “Philistines,” by the hand of Shamgar (compare 1 Samuel 12:9).
Judges 20:28 — Phinehas, the son of Eleazar ... - A most important chronological statement, which makes it probable that these events occurred within twenty years of the death of Joshua.To-morrow - The two former answers only bade them go up against Benjamin; now, for the first time, the promise is added, “Tomorrow,” etc. (compare Joshua 8:1).
2 Peter overview — Introduction to 2 PeterSection 1. Genuineness and Authenticity of the EpistleIt is well known that at an early period of the Christian history there were doubts respecting the canonical authority of the Second Epistle of Peter. The sole ground of the doubt was, whether Peter was the
1 John 5:8 — And there are three that bear witness in earth - This is a part of the text, which, if the reasoning above is correct, is to be omitted. The genuine passage reads, 1 John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record (or witness, μαρτυροῦντες marturountes) - the Spirit, and the water, and the blood.” There is no reference to the fact that it is done “in earth.” The phrase was introduced to correspond with what was
Ruth 2:1 — A kinsman - More literally “an acquaintance”; here (and in the feminine, Ruth 3:2) denoting the person with whom one is intimately acquainted, one’s near relation. The next kinsman of Ruth 2:20, etc. גאל gā'al, is a wholly different word.Boaz - Commonly taken to mean, “strength is in him” (compare 1 Kings 7:21).
1 Samuel 2:2 — Any rock ... - The term rock as applied to God is first found in the song of Moses (see Deuteronomy 32:4 note), where the juxtaposition of rock and salvation in 1 Samuel 2:15, “he lightly esteemed the rock of his salvation,” seems to indicate that Hannah was acquainted with the song of Moses.
1 Samuel 25:29 — In the bundle - Rather, “the bag,” in which anything precious, or important to be preserved, was put, and the bag was then tied up (compare Genesis 42:35).The souls ... shall he sling out - The comparison is especially appropriate as addressed to David, whose feat with his sling was so celebrated 1 Samuel 17:49.
