1 Kings 14:7 — As Jeroboam’s appointment to the kingdom had been formally announced to him by the prophet Ahijah, so the same prophet is commissioned to acquaint him with his forfeiture of it. Compare 1 Samuel 15:26-28.
2 Kings 6:2 — Take every man a beam - Trees were rare in most parts of Palestine, but plentiful in the Jordan Valley. Jericho was known in early times as “the city of palms” Deuteronomy 34:3; Judges 1:16.
1 Chronicles 19:6 — A thousand talents of silver - The price is not given in Samuel. On the practice of hiring troops about this time in western Asia, see 1 Kings 15:18; 2Ki 7:6; 2 Chronicles 25:6.
2 Chronicles 34:11 — The “houses” intended are either the “chambers” which surrounded the temple on three sides 1 Kings 6:5, or out-buildings attached to the courts. The “kings of Judah” intended are, no doubt, Manasseh and Amon.
2 Chronicles 36:8 — His abominations which he did - See Jeremiah 7:9, Jeremiah 7:30-31; Jeremiah 19:3-13; Jeremiah 25:1 etc.; Jehoiakim appears to have restored all the idolatries which Josiah his father had swept away.
Proverbs 24:26 — Better, He shall kiss lips that giveth a right answer, i. e., he shall gain the hearts of men as much as by all outward signs of sympathy and favor. Compare 2 Samuel 15:1-6.
Proverbs 8:2-3 — The full enumeration of localities points to the publicity and openness of Wisdom’s teaching (see Proverbs 1:20 note), as contrasted with the stealth and secrecy and darkness which shroud the harlot’s enticements Proverbs 7:9.
Jeremiah 23:25 — In Deuteronomy 13:1 “a dreamer of dreams” is used in a bad sense, and with reason. God communicating His will by dreams was a thing too easy to counterfeit for it not to be misused.
Jeremiah 6:17 — Watchmen - The prophets Isaiah 52:8.The second of the trumpet - This was the signal for flight Jeremiah 6:1; Amos 3:6. Similarly the prophet’s warning was to move men to escape from God’s judgments.
2 Thessalonians 3:7 — For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us - You know what you should do in order to imitate us.For we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you - See the notes on 1 Thessalonians 2:10.
Judges 1:17 — Hormah - See Numbers 21:1 note. The destruction then vowed was now accomplished. This is another decisive indication that the events here related belong to Joshua’s lifetime. This would be about six years after the vow.
2 Samuel 19:5 — Had Absalom gained the victory, it is likely that, according to the manner of Oriental despots, he would have sought to secure his throne by killing all possible competitors Judges 9:5; 1 Kings 15:29.
