But sin seized the opportunity provided by this commandment and produced in me all kinds of sinful desires. For apart from the law, sin is dead.Romans 4:15; 5:20; 1 Corinthians 15:56;">[xr]

At one time I was alive without any connection toany connection to">[fn] the law. But when the commandment came, sin sprang to life,

Now, did something good bring me death? Of course not! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used something good to cause my death, so that through the commandment sin might become more sinful than ever.

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am mere flesh, sold as a slave to sin.sold under sin">[fn]1 Kings 21:20,25; 2 Kings 17:17;">[xr]

I don't understand what I am doing. For I don't do what I want to do, but instead do what I hate.Galatians 5:17;">[xr]

As it is, I am no longer the one who is doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me.

For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but I cannot carry it out.Genesis 6:5; 8:21;">[xr]

For I don't do the good I want to do, but instead do the evil that I don't want to do.

But if I do what I don't want to do, I am no longer the one who is doing it, but it is the sin that lives in me.

but I see in my bodyin my members">[fn] a different law waging war with the law in my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin that exists in my body.in my members">[fn]Romans 6:13,19; Galatians 5:17;">[xr]

Thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.1 Corinthians 15:57;">[xr]

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in union with Christ Jesus.Christ Jesus, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit">[fn]Romans 8:4; Galatians 5:16,25;">[xr]

so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.Romans 8:1;">[xr]

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.John 3:6; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Galatians 5:22,25;">[xr]

To set our minds on the flesh leads to death, but to set our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace.Romans 6:13,21; Galatians 6:8;">[xr]

You, however, are not of the flesh but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.John 3:34; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; Galatians 4:6; Philippians 1:19; 1 Peter 1:11;">[xr]

But if Christ is in you, your bodies are dead because of sin, but the Spiritspirit">[fn] is life because of righteousness.

Consequently, brothers, we have an obligation - but it is not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.Romans 6:7,14;">[xr]

For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you continually put to death the activities of the body, you will live.Romans 8:6; Galatians 6:8; Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:5;">[xr]

However, not only creation groans,groans">[fn] but we who have the first fruits of the Spirit also groan inwardly as we eagerly wait for our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.Luke 20:36; 21:28; 2 Corinthians 5:2,4-5; Ephesians 1:14; 4:30;">[xr]
