ἀθυμέω, (ῶ; common among the Greeks from (Aeschylus) Thucydides down; to be ἄθυμος (θυμός, spirit, courage), to be disheartened, dispirited, broken in spirit: Colossians 3:21. (the Sept. 1 Samuel 1:6f, etc.; Judith 7:22; 1 Macc. 4:27).

P Amh II. 37.7, cf. .10 (B.C. 196 or 172) μὴ ἀθύμει. P Giss I. 79iii. 11 (ii/A.D.) οὗ σ ̣[άρι ]ν ̣ οὐδ [εὶ ]ς ἀθυμεῖ πωλεῖν κτῆμα. The substantive is found P Par 22.14 f. (ii/B.C.) τῷ δὲ μὴ ἡμᾶς εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ ὑπὸ τῆς ἀθυμίας μετήλλαχεν τὸν βίον. The adverb ἀθύμως occurs in Syll 226.109 (iii/B.C.) πολλῶν ἐχόντων ἀ. καὶ παρεσκεασμένων ἐγλείπειν τὴν πόλιν.
