For the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, [is] he that touches the land and it melts, and all that dwell therein shall mourn; and it shall rise up wholly like the River, and shall sink again, like the River of Egypt;

[it is] he that builds his staircase in the heavens, and has founded his vault on the earth; he that calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth; Yahweh is his name.

For, look, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like [grain] is sifted in a sieve, yet the least kernel shall not fall on the earth.

For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.

For the day of Yahweh is near on all the nations: as you have done, it shall be done to you; your dealing shall return on your own head.

For as you have drank on my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yes, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.

And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Yahweh has spoken it.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Then they said to him, Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is on us; what is your occupation? and where do you come from? what is your country? and of what people are you?

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, What is this that you have done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so the sea shall be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, We urge you, O Yahweh, we urge you, let us not perish for this man's life, and don't lay innocent blood on us; for you, O Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.

For you had cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All your waves and your billows passed over me.

And he prayed to Yahweh, and said, I pray you, O Yahweh, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness, and one who repents of the evil.

Therefore now, O Yahweh, take, I urge you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made for himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.

And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
