For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins-you that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].

that sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; that invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;

that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

For thus Amos says, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.

but don't prophesy again anymore at Beth-el; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.

that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwells therein? yes, it shall rise up wholly like the River; and it shall be troubled and sink again, like the River of Egypt.

And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Look, the days come, says the Lord Yahweh, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh.

In that day the fair virgins and the young men shall faint for thirst.

And though they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good.
