When he went back to the disciples, he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So, you menyou (pl.)">[fn] couldn't stay awake with me for one hour, could you?

Again he came back and found them asleep, for their eyes were very heavy.

After leaving them again, he went away and prayed again for the third time, saying the same thing.

Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, "You might as well keep on sleeping and resting.Are you still sleeping and resting?">[fn] Look! The time is near for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?"do what you came for">[fn] Then the other menthey">[fn] came forward, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.Psalm 41:9; 55:13;">[xr]

Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place! For all who use a sword will be killed by a sword.Genesis 9:6; Revelation 13:10;">[xr]

Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole CouncilSanhedrin">[fn] were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death.

So they decided to use the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial ground for foreigners.

and theyI">[fn] gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."Zechariah 11:12-13; Jeremiah 32:6-9">[fn]

So when the peoplethey">[fn] had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which man do you want me to release for you - Barabbas,Jesus Barabbas">[fn] or Jesus who is called the Christ?"[fn]

For he knew that they had handed him over because of jealousy.

While he was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him a message.sent him">[fn] It said, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I have suffered terribly because of a dream about him."

But the high priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to demand that Jesus be put to death.Mark 15:11; Luke 23:18; John 18:40; Acts 3:14;">[xr]

So the governor said to them, "Which of the two men do you want me to release for you?" They said, "Barabbas!"

Then he released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.Isaiah 53:5; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:16,24-25; John 19:1,16;">[xr]

He trusts in God. Let Godhim">[fn] rescue him now if he cares for him. After all, he said, 'I am the Son of God,'"Psalm 22:8;">[xr]
