Pax 1146 (troch.), Philem. 125. --Syria was called Σῠρία, Ion. -ιη, ἡ, Hdt. 1.105, etc.; Σ. ἡ Παλαιστίνη Id. 3.91, 4.39; Σ. Str. 2.5.38.--The Syrians were also called Σύριοι, a name which in early times was given to the Assyrians, Hdt. 7.63, cf. A. Pers. 84 (lyr.), Luc. Syr.D. 1; and to the Cappadocians or Λευκόσυροι (Str. 12.3.5. al.), Hdt. 1.72, 2.104, 3.90, 5.49; Σ. Καππαδόκαι (v.l. Σ. καὶ K.) Id. 1.72; Σ. οἱ ἐν τῇ Παλαιστίνῃ Id. 2.104.-- Adj. τελειόω is common in legal papyri = ";execute"; : see e.g. P Oxy III. 483.20 (A.D. 108) τελειῶσαι τὸν χρημα [τισμὸν ] ὡς καθήκει, ";to execute the deed in the proper way"; (Edd.), and P Giss I. 34.16 (A.D. 265–6) ἐτε ̣λ ̣ε ̣ι ̣[ωσε ]ν τὰ νόμιμα. In P Oxy II. 238.9 (A.D. 72) it seems rather to have the meaning ";complete"; by the insertion of date and signatures—προσέρχεσθαι τοῖς ἀγορανόμοις καὶ τε [λειοῦν ] ταύτας (sc. οἰκονομίας) ἐντὸς [. . . . : see the editors’ note.
On the use of the verb in connexion with martyrdom, as in 4 Maccabees 7:15 ὃν πιστὴ θανάτου σφραγὶς ἐτελείωσεν, see Moffatt Heb. p. 32, and cf. the Christian gravestone Preisigke 1600.3 ἔνθα κατά [κει ]ται ἡ μα <κα > ρία Π.[.]θία, ἐτε ̣λεώθη μη (νὶ) Θὼθ κ ̄α ̣̄. MGr τελειώνω, ";finish.";
