As they were speaking to the people, the priests and ^(C1)the captain of the temple guard and ^(C2)the Sadducees ^(C3)came up to them,

being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming ^(F1)(C1)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And they laid hands on them and ^(C1)put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening.

But many of those who had heard the ^(F1)message believed; and ^(C1)the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

On the next day, their ^(C1)rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;

and ^(C1)Annas the high priest was there, and ^(C2)Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.

When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this?"

Then Peter, ^(F1)(C1)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "^(F2)(C2)Rulers and elders of the people,

if we are ^(F1)on trial today for ^(C1)a benefit done to a sick man, as to ^(F2)how this man has been made well,

let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that ^(F1)(C1)by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom ^(C2)God raised from the dead—^(F1)by ^(F2)this name this man stands here before you in good health.

"^(F1)(C1)He is the ^(C2)STONE WHICH WAS ^(C3)REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE.

"And there is salvation in ^(C1)no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved."

Now as they observed the ^(C1)confidence of ^(C2)Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and ^(C3)began to recognize them ^(F1)as having been with Jesus.

And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.

But when they had ordered them to leave the ^(F1)(C1)Council, they began to confer with one another,

saying, "^(C1)What are we to do with these men? For the fact that a ^(C2)noteworthy ^(F1)miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

"But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let's warn them not to speak any longer to any person ^(C1)in this name."

And when they had summoned them, they ^(C1)commanded them not to speak or teach at all ^(F1)in the name of Jesus.

But ^(C1)Peter and John answered and said to them, "^(C2)Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment;

for ^(C1)we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) ^(C1)on account of the people, because they were all ^(C2)glorifying God for what had happened;

for the man on whom this ^(F1)miracle of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.

When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported everything that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

And when they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, "^(F1)Lord, it is You who ^(C1)MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND EVERYTHING THAT IS IN THEM,

who ^(C1)by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, '^(C2)WHY WERE THE ^(F1)NATIONS INSOLENT, AND THE PEOPLES PLOTTING IN VAIN?

-'^(C1)THE KINGS OF THE EARTH ^(F1)TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD AND AGAINST HIS ^(F2)(C2)CHRIST.'

"For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy ^(F1)(C1)Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both ^(C2)Herod and ^(C3)Pontius Pilate, along with ^(C4)the ^(F2)Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,

to do whatever Your hand and ^(C1)purpose predestined to occur.

"And ^(F1)now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant it to Your bond-servants to ^(C1)speak Your word with all ^(C2)confidence,

while You extend Your hand to heal, and ^(F1)(C1)signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy ^(F2)(C2)Servant Jesus."

And when they had prayed, the ^(C1)place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all ^(C2)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to ^(C3)speak the word of God with ^(C4)boldness.

And the ^(F1)congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them ^(F2)claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but ^(C1)all things were common property to them.

And ^(C1)with great power the apostles were giving ^(C2)testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.

For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses ^(C1)would sell them and bring the ^(F1)proceeds of the sales

and ^(C1)lay them at the apostles' feet, and they would be ^(C2)distributed to each to the extent that any had need.

Now Joseph, a Levite of ^(C1)Cyprian birth, who was also called ^(C2)Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of ^(F1)(C3)Encouragement),

^(F1)owned a tract of land. So he sold it, and brought the money and ^(C1)laid it at the apostles' feet.

But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,

and ^(C1)kept back some of the ^(F1)proceeds for himself, with his wife's ^(F2)full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he ^(C2)laid it at the apostles' feet.

But Peter said, "Ananias, why has ^(C1)Satan filled your heart to lie ^(C2)to the Holy Spirit and to ^(C3)keep back some of the ^(F1)proceeds of the land?

"While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not ^(F1)under your control? Why is it that you have ^(F2)conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but ^(C1)to God."

And as he heard these words, Ananias ^(C1)collapsed and ^(F1)died; and ^(C2)great fear came over all who heard about it.

The young men got up and ^(C1)covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.

Now an interval of about three hours elapsed, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

And Peter responded to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land ^(C1)for ^(F1)this price?" And she said, "Yes, for ^(F1)that price."

Then Peter said to her, "Why is it that you have agreed together to ^(C1)put ^(C2)the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well."

And immediately she ^(C1)collapsed at his feet and ^(F1)died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

And ^(C1)great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard about these things.

^(F1)At the hands of the apostles many ^(F2)(C1)signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all ^(F3)together in ^(C2)Solomon's ^(F4)portico.

But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, ^(C1)the people held them in high esteem.

And increasingly ^(C1)believers in the Lord, large numbers of men and women, were being ^(C2)added to their number,

to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by ^(C1)at least his shadow might fall on any of them.

The ^(F1)people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together as well, bringing people who were sick ^(F2)or tormented with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is ^(C1)the sect of ^(C2)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.

They laid hands on the apostles and ^(C1)put them in a public prison.

But during the night ^(C1)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said,

"Go, stand and ^(F1)speak to the people in the temple area ^(F2)(C1)the whole message of this Life."

Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area ^(C1)about daybreak and began to teach. Now when ^(C2)the high priest and his associates came, they called ^(C3)the ^(F1)Council together, that is, all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison for them to be brought.

But ^(C1)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported,

saying, "We found the prison locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside."

Now when ^(C1)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what ^(F1)would come of this.

But someone came and reported to them, "The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!"

Then ^(C1)the captain went along with ^(C2)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for ^(C3)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

When they had brought them, they had them stand ^(F1)before ^(C1)the Council. The high priest interrogated them,

saying, "We gave you ^(C1)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and ^(F1)yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and ^(C2)intend to bring this Man's blood upon us."

But Peter and the apostles answered, "^(C1)We must obey God rather than men.

"^(C1)The God of our fathers ^(C2)raised up Jesus, whom you ^(C3)put to death by hanging Him on ^(F1)(C4)a cross.

"^(C1)He is the One whom God exalted ^(F1)to His right hand as a ^(F2)(C2)Prince and a ^(C3)Savior, to grant ^(C4)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

"And we are ^(C1)witnesses ^(F1)of these things; and ^(C2)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

But when they heard this, they became ^(C1)infuriated and nearly decided to execute them.

But a Pharisee named ^(C1)Gamaliel, a ^(C2)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in ^(C3)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.

And he said to them, "Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men.

"For, some time ago Theudas appeared, ^(C1)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. ^(F1)But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.

"After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of ^(C1)the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.

"And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or ^(F1)movement ^(C1)is men, it will be overthrown;

but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found ^(C1)fighting against God."

They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they ^(C1)flogged them and ordered them not to ^(F1)speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.

So they went on their way from the presence of the ^(F1)(C1)Council, ^(C2)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame ^(C3)for His name.

^(C1)And every day, in the temple and ^(F1)from house to house, they did not stop teaching and ^(C2)preaching the good news of Jesus as the ^(F2)Christ.

Now ^(F1)at this time, as the ^(C1)disciples were ^(C2)increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the ^(F2)(C3)Hellenistic Jews against the native ^(C4)Hebrews, because their ^(C5)widows were being overlooked in ^(C6)the daily serving of food.

So the twelve summoned the ^(F1)congregation of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.

"Instead, ^(C1)brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, ^(C2)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.

"But we will ^(C1)devote ourselves to prayer and to the ^(F1)ministry of the word."

The ^(F1)announcement found approval with the whole ^(F2)congregation; and they chose ^(C1)Stephen, a man ^(C2)full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and ^(C3)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and ^(F3)Nicolas, a ^(F4)(C4)proselyte from ^(C5)Antioch.

And they brought these men before the apostles; and after ^(C1)praying, they ^(C2)laid their hands on them.

^(C1)The word of God kept spreading; and ^(C2)the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to ^(C3)the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great ^(C1)wonders and ^(F1)signs among the people.

But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both ^(C1)Cyrenians and ^(C2)Alexandrians, and some from ^(C3)Cilicia and ^(F1)(C4)Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen.

But they were unable to ^(F1)cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking.

Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God."

And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they ^(C1)came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him ^(F1)before ^(C2)the ^(F2)Council.

They put forward ^(C1)false witnesses who said, "This man does not stop ^(F1)speaking against this ^(C2)holy place and the Law;

for we have heard him say that ^(C1)this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change ^(C2)the customs which Moses handed down to us."

And all who were sitting in the ^(F1)(C1)Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.
