2 Samuel 7-8

Chapter 7

God's Promise to David(a)

1 After the king was settled in his palace(b) and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies(c) around him,(d) 2 he said to Nathan(e) the prophet, "Here I am, living in a house(f) of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent."(g)

3 Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind,(h) go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you."

4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

5 "Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(i) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(j) 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(k) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(l) as my dwelling.(m) 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(n) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(o) my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house(p) of cedar?(q)"'

8 "Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(r) and appointed you ruler(s) over my people Israel.(t) 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone,(u) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(v) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(w) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(x) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(y) Wicked(z) people will not oppress them anymore,(aa) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](ab) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(ac)

"‘The Lord declares(ad) to you that the Lord himself will establish(ae) a house(af) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(ag) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(ah) and I will establish his kingdom.(ai) 13 He is the one who will build a house(aj) for my Name,(ak) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(al) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(am) When he does wrong, I will punish him(an) with a rod(ao) wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him,(ap) as I took it away from Saul,(aq) whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne(ar) will be established(as) forever.(at)'"

17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David's Prayer(au)

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord , and he said:

"Who am I,(av) Sovereign Lord , and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord , you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree,(aw) Sovereign Lord , is for a mere human![c]

20 "What more can David say(ax) to you? For you know(ay) your servant,(az) Sovereign Lord . 21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.

22 "How great(ba) you are,(bb) Sovereign Lord ! There is no one like(bc) you, and there is no God(bd) but you, as we have heard with our own ears.(be) 23 And who is like your people Israel(bf)—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name(bg) for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders(bh) by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed(bi) from Egypt?[d] 24 You have established your people Israel as your very own(bj) forever, and you, Lord , have become their God.(bk)

25 "And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise(bl) you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, 26 so that your name(bm) will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established(bn) in your sight.

27 " Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 Sovereign Lord , you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy,(bo) and you have promised these good things to your servant. 29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord , have spoken, and with your blessing(bp) the house of your servant will be blessed forever."

Chapter 8

David's Victories(a)

1 In the course of time, David defeated the Philistines(b) and subdued(c) them, and he took Metheg Ammah from the control of the Philistines.

2 David also defeated the Moabites.(d) He made them lie down on the ground and measured them off with a length of cord. Every two lengths of them were put to death, and the third length was allowed to live. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.(e)

3 Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer(f) son of Rehob, king of Zobah,(g) when he went to restore his monument at[a] the Euphrates(h) River. 4 David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers[b] and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung(i) all but a hundred of the chariot horses.

5 When the Arameans of Damascus(j) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6 He put garrisons(k) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(l) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(m)

7 David took the gold shields(n) that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 From Tebah[c] and Berothai,(o) towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.

9 When Tou[d] king of Hamath(p) heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,(q) 10 he sent his son Joram[e] to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory in battle over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze.

11 King David dedicated(r) these articles to the Lord , as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: 12 Edom[f](s) and Moab,(t) the Ammonites(u) and the Philistines,(v) and Amalek.(w) He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David became famous(x) after he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites[g] in the Valley of Salt.(y)

14 He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites(z) became subject to David.(aa) The Lord gave David victory(ab) wherever he went.(ac)

David's Officials(ad)

15 David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right(ae) for all his people. 16 Joab(af) son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat(ag) son of Ahilud was recorder;(ah) 17 Zadok(ai) son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar(aj) were priests; Seraiah was secretary;(ak) 18 Benaiah(al) son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites(am) and Pelethites; and David's sons were priests.[h]

Daniel 4

Chapter 4

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream of a Tree

1 [a]King Nebuchadnezzar,

To the nations and peoples of every language,(a) who live in all the earth:

May you prosper greatly!(b)

2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs(c) and wonders that the Most High God(d) has performed for me.

3 How great are his signs,
     how mighty his wonders!(e)
His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
his dominion endures(f) from generation to generation.

4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented(g) and prosperous. 5 I had a dream(h) that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed,(i) the images and visions that passed through my mind(j) terrified me.(k) 6 So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret(l) the dream for me. 7 When the magicians,(m) enchanters, astrologers[b] and diviners(n) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.(o) 8 Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,(p) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods(q) is in him.)

9 I said, "Belteshazzar, chief(r) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods(s) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:(t) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.(u) 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.(v) 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches;(w) from it every creature was fed.

13 "In the visions I saw while lying in bed,(x) I looked, and there before me was a holy one,(y) a messenger,[c] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree(z) and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.(aa) 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.

"‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times[d] pass by for him.(ab)

17 "‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High(ac) is sovereign(ad) over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest(ae) of people.'

18 "This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.(af) But you can,(ag) because the spirit of the holy gods(ah) is in you."(ai)

Daniel Interprets the Dream

19 Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified(aj) him. So the king said, "Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning alarm you."(ak)

Belteshazzar answered, "My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries! 20 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth, 21 with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds(al) 22 Your Majesty, you are that tree!(am) You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.(an)

23 "Your Majesty saw a holy one,(ao) a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.'(ap)

24 "This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree(aq) the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched(ar) with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High(as) is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.(at) 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots(au) means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.(av) 27 Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.(aw) It may be that then your prosperity(ax) will continue.(ay)"

The Dream Is Fulfilled

28 All this happened(az) to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory(ba) of my majesty?"(bb)

31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, "This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you.(bc) 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes."(bd)

33 Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched(be) with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.(bf)

34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity(bg) was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.(bh)

His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom(bi) endures from generation to generation.(bj)
35 All the peoples of the earth
     are regarded as nothing.(bk)
He does as he pleases(bl)
     with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back(bm) his hand(bn)
or say to him: "What have you done?"(bo)

36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.(bp) My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt(bq) and glorify(br) the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.(bs) And those who walk in pride(bt) he is able to humble.(bu)

Mark 3:20-35

Chapter 3

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered,(t) so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.(u) 21 When his family[b] heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind."(v)

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem(w) said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul!(x) By the prince of demons he is driving out demons."(y)

23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables:(z) "How can Satan(aa) drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man's house.(ab) 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin."(ac)

30 He said this because they were saying, "He has an impure spirit."

31 Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.(ad) Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you."

33 "Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."
