Exodus 20,21

The Ten Commandments(a)

1 And God spoke(b) all these words:(c)

2 "I am the Lord your God,(d) who brought you out(e) of Egypt,(f) out of the land of slavery.(g)

3 "You shall have no other gods before[a] me.(h)

4 "You shall not make for yourself an image(i) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship(j) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,(k) punishing the children for the sin of the parents(l) to the third and fourth generation(m) of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand(n) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.(o)

8 "Remember the Sabbath(p) day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,(q) 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath(r) to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,(s) the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested(t) on the seventh day.(u) Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

12 "Honor your father and your mother,(v) so that you may live long(w) in the land(x) the Lord your God is giving you.

13 "You shall not murder.(y)

14 "You shall not commit adultery.(z)

15 "You shall not steal.(aa)

16 "You shall not give false testimony(ab) against your neighbor.(ac)

17 "You shall not covet(ad) your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet(ae) and saw the mountain in smoke,(af) they trembled with fear.(ag) They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak(ah) to us or we will die."(ai)

20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid.(aj) God has come to test(ak) you, so that the fear(al) of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."(am)

21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness(an) where God was.

Idols and Altars

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:(ao) 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me;(ap) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.(aq)

24 "‘Make an altar(ar) of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings(as) and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name(at) to be honored, I will come to you and bless(au) you. 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool(av) on it. 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts(aw) may be exposed.'

1 "These are the laws(a) you are to set before them:

Hebrew Servants(b)(c)

2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant,(d) he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free,(e) without paying anything. 3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.

5 "But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,'(f) 6 then his master must take him before the judges.[a](g) He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce(h) his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.(i)

7 "If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. 8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,[b] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. 9 If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. 10 If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.(j) 11 If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.

Personal Injuries

12 "Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death.(k) 13 However, if it is not done intentionally, but God lets it happen, they are to flee to a place(l) I will designate. 14 But if anyone schemes and kills someone deliberately,(m) that person is to be taken from my altar and put to death.(n)

15 "Anyone who attacks[c] their father or mother is to be put to death.

16 "Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death,(o) whether the victim has been sold(p) or is still in the kidnapper's possession.

17 "Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.(q)

18 "If people quarrel and one person hits another with a stone or with their fist[d] and the victim does not die but is confined to bed, 19 the one who struck the blow will not be held liable if the other can get up and walk around outside with a staff; however, the guilty party must pay the injured person for any loss of time and see that the victim is completely healed.

20 "Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.(r)

22 "If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely[e] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands(s) and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,(t) 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth,(u) hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

26 "An owner who hits a male or female slave in the eye and destroys it must let the slave go free to compensate for the eye. 27 And an owner who knocks out the tooth of a male or female slave must let the slave go free to compensate for the tooth.

28 "If a bull gores a man or woman to death, the bull is to be stoned to death,(v) and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the bull will not be held responsible. 29 If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up(w) and it kills a man or woman, the bull is to be stoned and its owner also is to be put to death. 30 However, if payment is demanded, the owner may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is demanded.(x) 31 This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter. 32 If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels[f](y) of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull is to be stoned to death.

33 "If anyone uncovers a pit(z) or digs one and fails to cover it and an ox or a donkey falls into it, 34 the one who opened the pit must pay the owner for the loss and take the dead animal in exchange.

35 "If anyone's bull injures someone else's bull and it dies, the two parties are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally. 36 However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up,(aa) the owner must pay, animal for animal, and take the dead animal in exchange.

Proverbs 9

Chapter 9

Invitations of Wisdom and Folly

1 Wisdom has built(a) her house;
     she has set up[a] its seven pillars.
2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;(b)
     she has also set her table.(c)
3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls(d)
     from the highest point of the city,(e)
4       "Let all who are simple(f) come to my house!"
To those who have no sense(g) she says,
5       "Come,(h) eat my food
     and drink the wine I have mixed.(i)
6 Leave your simple ways and you will live;(j)
     walk in the way of insight."(k)

7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;
     whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.(l)
8 Do not rebuke mockers(m) or they will hate you;
     rebuke the wise and they will love you.(n)
9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
     teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.(o)

10 The fear of the Lord (p) is the beginning of wisdom,
     and knowledge of the Holy One(q) is understanding.(r)
11 For through wisdom[b] your days will be many,
     and years will be added to your life.(s)
12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
     if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

13 Folly is an unruly woman;(t)
     she is simple and knows nothing.(u)
14 She sits at the door of her house,
     on a seat at the highest point of the city,(v)
15 calling out(w) to those who pass by,
     who go straight on their way,
16       "Let all who are simple come to my house!"
To those who have no sense(x) she says,
17       "Stolen water is sweet;
     food eaten in secret is delicious!(y)"
18 But little do they know that the dead are there,
     that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.(z)

Matthew 1

Chapter 1

The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah(a)(b)(c)

1 This is the genealogy[a] of Jesus the Messiah[b] the son of David,(d) the son of Abraham:(e)

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,(f)

Isaac the father of Jacob,(g)

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,(h)

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,(i)

Perez the father of Hezron,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,(j)

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,

Obed the father of Jesse,

6 and Jesse the father of King David.(k)

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,(l)

7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,

Rehoboam the father of Abijah,

Abijah the father of Asa,

8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,

Manasseh the father of Amon,

Amon the father of Josiah,

11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[c] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.(n)

12 After the exile to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,(o)

Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,(p)

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(r)

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(s) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(t) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(u) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(v) and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](w) because he will save his people from their sins."(x)

22 All this took place to fulfill(y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"[g](z) (which means "God with us").

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(aa) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(ab)
