Proverbs 5,6,7

Warning Against Adultery

1 My son,(a) pay attention to my wisdom,
     turn your ear to my words(b) of insight,
2 that you may maintain discretion
     and your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
     and her speech is smoother than oil;(c)
4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,(d)
     sharp as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death;
     her steps lead straight to the grave.(e)
6 She gives no thought to the way of life;
     her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.(f)

7 Now then, my sons, listen(g) to me;
     do not turn aside from what I say.
8 Keep to a path far from her,(h)
     do not go near the door of her house,
9 lest you lose your honor to others
     and your dignity[a] to one who is cruel,
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth
     and your toil enrich the house of another.(i)
11 At the end of your life you will groan,
     when your flesh and body are spent.
12 You will say, "How I hated discipline!
     How my heart spurned correction!(j)
13 I would not obey my teachers
     or turn my ear to my instructors.
14 And I was soon in serious trouble(k)
     in the assembly of God's people."(l)

15 Drink water from your own cistern,
     running water from your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
     your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be yours alone,
     never to be shared with strangers.
18 May your fountain(m) be blessed,
     and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.(n)
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer(o)
     may her breasts satisfy you always,
     may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man's wife?
     Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

21 For your ways are in full view(p) of the Lord ,
     and he examines(q) all your paths.(r)
22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;(s)
     the cords of their sins hold them fast.(t)
23 For lack of discipline they will die,(u)
     led astray by their own great folly.(v)

Warnings Against Folly

1 My son,(a) if you have put up security(b) for your neighbor,(c)
     if you have shaken hands in pledge(d) for a stranger,
2 you have been trapped by what you said,
     ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, to free yourself,
     since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
     and give your neighbor no rest!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
     no slumber to your eyelids.(e)
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle(f) from the hand of the hunter,(g)
     like a bird from the snare of the fowler.(h)

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;(i)
     consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
     no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer(j)
     and gathers its food at harvest.(k)

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?(l)
     When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
     a little folding of the hands to rest(m)
11 and poverty(n) will come on you like a thief
     and scarcity like an armed man.

12 A troublemaker and a villain,
     who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13       who winks maliciously with his eye,(o)
     signals with his feet
     and motions with his fingers,(p)
14       who plots evil(q) with deceit in his heart—
     he always stirs up conflict.(r)
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;(s)
     he will suddenly(t) be destroyed—without remedy.(u)

16 There are six things the Lord hates,(v)
     seven that are detestable to him:
17           haughty eyes,(w)
         a lying tongue,(x)
         hands that shed innocent blood,(y)
18           a heart that devises wicked schemes,
         feet that are quick to rush into evil,(z)
19           a false witness(aa) who pours out lies(ab)
         and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.(ac)

Warning Against Adultery

20 My son,(ad) keep your father's command
     and do not forsake your mother's teaching.(ae)
21 Bind them always on your heart;
     fasten them around your neck.(af)
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
     when you sleep, they will watch over you;
     when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp,
     this teaching is a light,(ag)
and correction and instruction
     are the way to life,(ah)
24 keeping you from your neighbor's wife,
     from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.(ai)

25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
     or let her captivate you with her eyes.

26 For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
     but another man's wife preys on your very life.(aj)
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
     without his clothes being burned?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals
     without his feet being scorched?
29 So is he who sleeps(ak) with another man's wife;(al)
     no one who touches her will go unpunished.

30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
     to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,(am)
     though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32 But a man who commits adultery(an) has no sense;(ao)
     whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
     and his shame will never(ap) be wiped away.

34 For jealousy(aq) arouses a husband's fury,(ar)
     and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not accept any compensation;
     he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.(as)

Warning Against the Adulterous Woman

1 My son,(a) keep my words
     and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and you will live;(b)
     guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
     write them on the tablet of your heart.(c)
4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"
     and to insight, "You are my relative."
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
     from the wayward woman with her seductive words.(d)

6 At the window of my house
     I looked down through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
     I noticed among the young men,
     a youth who had no sense.(e)
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
     walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight,(f) as the day was fading,
     as the dark of night set in.

10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
     dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is unruly(g) and defiant,
     her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
     at every corner she lurks.)(h)
13 She took hold of him(i) and kissed him
     and with a brazen face she said:(j)

14 "Today I fulfilled my vows,
     and I have food from my fellowship offering(k) at home.
15 So I came out to meet you;
     I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have covered my bed
     with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed(l)
     with myrrh,(m) aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let's drink deeply of love till morning;
     let's enjoy ourselves with love!(n)
19 My husband is not at home;
     he has gone on a long journey.
20 He took his purse filled with money
     and will not be home till full moon."

21 With persuasive words she led him astray;
     she seduced him with her smooth talk.(o)
22 All at once he followed her
     like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer[a] stepping into a noose[b](p)
23       till an arrow pierces(q) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
     little knowing it will cost him his life.(r)

24 Now then, my sons, listen(s) to me;
     pay attention to what I say.
25 Do not let your heart turn to her ways
     or stray into her paths.(t)
26 Many are the victims she has brought down;
     her slain are a mighty throng.
27 Her house is a highway to the grave,
     leading down to the chambers of death.(u)

John 20

Chapter 20

The Empty Tomb(a)

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene(b) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.(c) 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,(d) and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"(e)

3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(f) 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in(g) at the strips of linen(h) lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head.(i) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first,(j) also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture(k) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)(l) 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(m) 12 and saw two angels in white,(n) seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"(o)

"They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him."(p) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(q) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(r)

15 He asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?(s) Who is it you are looking for?"

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."

16 Jesus said to her, "Mary."

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(t) "Rabboni!"(u) (which means "Teacher").

17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(v) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(w) and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

18 Mary Magdalene(x) went to the disciples(y) with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(z) Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace(aa) be with you!"(ab) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(ac) The disciples were overjoyed(ad) when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you!(ae) As the Father has sent me,(af) I am sending you."(ag) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.(ah) 23 If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."(ai)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas(aj) (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!"

But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(ak) I will not believe."(al)

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace(am) be with you!"(an) 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."(ao)

28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed;(ap) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."(aq)

The Purpose of John's Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs(ar) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(as) 31 But these are written that you may believe[b](at) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,(au) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(av)
