Job 41,42

1 [a]"Can you pull in Leviathan(a) with a fishhook(b)
     or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through its nose(c)
     or pierce its jaw with a hook?(d)
3 Will it keep begging you for mercy?(e)
     Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will it make an agreement with you
     for you to take it as your slave for life?(f)
5 Can you make a pet of it like a bird
     or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders barter for it?
     Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its hide with harpoons
     or its head with fishing spears?(g)
8 If you lay a hand on it,
     you will remember the struggle and never do it again!(h)
9 Any hope of subduing it is false;
     the mere sight of it is overpowering.(i)
10 No one is fierce enough to rouse it.(j)
     Who then is able to stand against me?(k)
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?(l)
     Everything under heaven belongs to me.(m)

12 "I will not fail to speak of Leviathan's limbs,(n)
     its strength(o) and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off its outer coat?
     Who can penetrate its double coat of armor[b]?(p)
14 Who dares open the doors of its mouth,(q)
     ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 Its back has[c] rows of shields
     tightly sealed together;(r)
16 each is so close to the next
     that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another;
     they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
     its eyes are like the rays of dawn.(s)
19 Flames(t) stream from its mouth;
     sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from its nostrils(u)
     as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 Its breath(v) sets coals ablaze,
     and flames dart from its mouth.(w)
22 Strength(x) resides in its neck;
     dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
     they are firm and immovable.
24 Its chest is hard as rock,
     hard as a lower millstone.(y)
25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;(z)
     they retreat before its thrashing.(aa)
26 The sword that reaches it has no effect,
     nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.(ab)
27 Iron it treats like straw(ac)
     and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make it flee;(ad)
     slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw;(ae)
     it laughs(af) at the rattling of the lance.
30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
     leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.(ag)
31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron(ah)
     and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.(ai)
32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
     one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is its equal(aj)
     a creature without fear.
34 It looks down on all that are haughty;(ak)
     it is king over all that are proud.(al)"

Job

1 Then Job replied to the Lord :

2 "I know that you can do all things;(a)
     no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(b)
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?'(c)
     Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
     things too wonderful for me to know.(d)

4 "You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
     I will question you,
     and you shall answer me.'(e)
5 My ears had heard of you(f)
     but now my eyes have seen you.(g)
6 Therefore I despise myself(h)
     and repent(i) in dust and ashes."(j)

Epilogue

7 After the Lord had said these things to Job(k), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and your two friends,(l) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(m) 8 So now take seven bulls and seven rams(n) and go to my servant Job(o) and sacrifice a burnt offering(p) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(q) and not deal with you according to your folly.(r) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has."(s) 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(t) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job's prayer.(u)

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(v) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(w) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(x) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(y) and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.

12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(z)

Matthew 16

Chapter 16

The Demand for a Sign(a)

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees(b) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(c)

2 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](d) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah."(e) Jesus then left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."(f)

7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."

8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith,(g) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(h) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(i) 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(j)

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(k)

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist;(l) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."(m)

15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."(n)

17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(o) but by my Father in heaven.(p) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](q) and on this rock I will build my church,(r) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(s) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven."(t) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(u) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death(v)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(w) and suffer many things(x) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(y) and that he must be killed(z) and on the third day(aa) be raised to life.(ab)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan!(ac) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(ad) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(ae) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(af) is going to come(ag) in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(ah)

28 "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
