Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מַכְתֵּשׁ m. (from the root כָּתַשׁ).

(1)  a mortar, Proverbs 27:22.

(2)  Judges 15:19, prob. mortariolum dentium, Gr. ὁλμίσκος, socket of a tooth, see Bochart, Hieroz. t. i. p. 202. [Is it not a place of such a form that is spoken of in the cited passage?]

(3)  Zephaniah 1:11 [Maktesh], pr.n. of a valley near Jerusalem, prob. so called from its resemblance to a mortar.
