σῖτος, ὁ, heterocl. pl. σῖτα, τά, Xenoph. 2.8, Hdt. 4.128, 5.34 (neut. sg. σῖτον only Delph. 3(5).3 ii 19 (iv B.C.) ): — grain, comprehending both wheat ( πυρός ) and barley ( κριθή ), ἐν [Ἰθάκῃ] ς. ἀθέσφατος ἐν δέ τε οἶνος γίγνεται Od. 13.244; περὶ σίτου ἐκβολήν about the shooting of the corn into ear, Th. 4.1; τοῦ ς. ἀκμάζοντος at its ripening, Id. 2.19; πρὶν τὸν ς. ἐν ἀκμῇ εἶναι Id. 4.2; τὸν νέον ς. σὺν τῇ καλάμῃ ἀποκείμενον X. Od. 8.222, cf. 9.89; of savages, who eat flesh only, οὐδέ τι σῖτον ἤσθιον Hes. 4. rarely of beasts, fodder, Hes. Op. 604, E. HF 383 (lyr.), X. Eq. 4.1 . — In the general sense of food, Prose writers prefer the dim. form σιτία, τά .
II in Att. Law, allowance of grain made to widows and orphans. σῖτον διδόναι, ἀποδιδόναι, D. 27.15, 28.11, Arist. Ath. 56.7 .
2. δίκην σίτου δικάσασθαι, bring an action under the Athen. Corn-law against regraters and monopolists, Is. 3.9, cf. D. 59.52 .

";a roof"; (Mark 2:4), a poetical subst. which has passed into general use in the Κοινή, e.g. P Petr II. 12 (1).11 (B.C. 241) καθει (= ηι)ρηκότας τὰς στέγας, ";having taken down the upper story"; (Ed.)—an action on the part of the owners to avoid having Crown officials billeted on them (π ]ρὸς τὸ μὴ ἐπισταθμεύεσθαι). Cf. BGU III. 1002.6 (B.C. 55) τῆς πρώτης στέγης τῆς οἰκίας, P Lond 1164 (f).28 (A.D. 212) (= III. p. 162) ἡ οἰκία τῶν αὐτῶν στεγῶν, and P Flor I. 15.14, .16 (A.D. 563) ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ στέγῃ. . . ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ στέγῃ. In Syll 558 (= .3 756).14 (i/A.D.) τ (ὴ)ν ὀπίσω τοῦ προπύλου στέγην, the reference is to the covered vestibule adjoining the gate of the Temple of Asclepius : cf. ib. .18 στεγάσαι δὲ καὶ τοῦ προπύλου τὸ ὀπίσωι μέρος. A neut. subst. is found in Syll 813 (= .3 1179).20 ἐπ [ὶ τὸ α ]ὐτὸ στέγος ἐ [λθ ]εῖν, and a dim. in P Oxy I. 109.20 (list of personal property—iii/iv A.D.) στέγαστρον καινὸν α ̄, ";I new cover"; (Edd.).
