Jesuit, born Menaggio, Italy, 1689; died Lisbon, 1761. After laboring nearly thirty years on the Brazilian mission, he was called to the Portuguese Court; later he incurred the animosity of Pombal, who had him falsely accuied of conspiracy and strangled to death at an auto-da-fe.
