2 Chronicles 33

Chapter 33

Manasseh King of Judah(a)(b)

1 Manasseh(c) was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord ,(d) following the detestable(e) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 3 He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished; he also erected altars to the Baals and made Asherah poles.(f) He bowed down(g) to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. 4 He built altars in the temple of the Lord , of which the Lord had said, "My Name(h) will remain in Jerusalem forever." 5 In both courts of the temple of the Lord ,(i) he built altars to all the starry hosts. 6 He sacrificed his children(j) in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted mediums(k) and spiritists.(l) He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord , arousing his anger.

7 He took the image he had made and put it in God's temple,(m) of which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, "In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever. 8 I will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land(n) I assigned to your ancestors, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them concerning all the laws, decrees and regulations given through Moses." 9 But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites.(o)

10 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention. 11 So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner,(p) put a hook(q) in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles(r) and took him to Babylon. 12 In his distress he sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled(s) himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 13 And when he prayed to him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea; so he brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.

14 Afterward he rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, west of the Gihon(t) spring in the valley, as far as the entrance of the Fish Gate(u) and encircling the hill of Ophel;(v) he also made it much higher. He stationed military commanders in all the fortified cities in Judah.

15 He got rid of the foreign gods and removed(w) the image from the temple of the Lord , as well as all the altars he had built on the temple hill and in Jerusalem; and he threw them out of the city. 16 Then he restored the altar of the Lord and sacrificed fellowship offerings and thank offerings(x) on it, and told Judah to serve the Lord , the God of Israel. 17 The people, however, continued to sacrifice at the high places, but only to the Lord their God.

18 The other events of Manasseh's reign, including his prayer to his God and the words the seers spoke to him in the name of the Lord , the God of Israel, are written in the annals of the kings of Israel.[a] 19 His prayer and how God was moved by his entreaty, as well as all his sins and unfaithfulness, and the sites where he built high places and set up Asherah poles and idols before he humbled(y) himself—all these are written in the records of the seers.[b](z) 20 Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried(aa) in his palace. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.

Amon King of Judah(ab)

21 Amon(ac) was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem two years. 22 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord , as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshiped and offered sacrifices to all the idols Manasseh had made. 23 But unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble(ad) himself before the Lord ; Amon increased his guilt.

24 Amon's officials conspired against him and assassinated him in his palace. 25 Then the people(ae) of the land killed all who had plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place.

Psalms 89:1-18

Chapter 89

Psalm 89[a]

A maskil[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1 I will sing(a) of the Lord 's great love forever;
     with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known(b)
     through all generations.
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
     that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(c)
3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
     I have sworn to David my servant,
4 ‘I will establish your line forever
     and make your throne firm through all generations.'"[c](d)

5 The heavens(e) praise your wonders, Lord ,
     your faithfulness too, in the assembly(f) of the holy ones.
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord ?
     Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(g)
7 In the council(h) of the holy ones(i) God is greatly feared;
     he is more awesome than all who surround him.(j)
8 Who is like you,(k) Lord God Almighty?(l)
     You, Lord , are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

9 You rule over the surging sea;
     when its waves mount up, you still them.(m)
10 You crushed Rahab(n) like one of the slain;
     with your strong arm you scattered(o) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(p) and yours also the earth;(q)
     you founded the world and all that is in it.(r)
12 You created the north and the south;
     Tabor(s) and Hermon(t) sing for joy(u) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
     your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(v)

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(w)
     love and faithfulness go before you.(x)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
     who walk(y) in the light(z) of your presence, Lord .
16 They rejoice in your name(aa) all day long;
     they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(ab)
     and by your favor you exalt our horn.[d](ac)
18 Indeed, our shield[e](ad) belongs to the Lord ,
     our king(ae) to the Holy One of Israel.

John 21

Chapter 21

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(a) by the Sea of Galilee.[a](b) It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas(c) (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael(d) from Cana in Galilee,(e) the sons of Zebedee,(f) and two other disciples were together. 3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(g)

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(h)

5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?"

"No," they answered.

6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(i)

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(j) said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire(k) of burning coals there with fish on it,(l) and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(m) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(n) after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."(o)

Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."(p)

16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."(q)

17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?"(r) He said, "Lord, you know all things;(s) you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.(t) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(u) by which Peter would glorify God.(v) Then he said to him, "Follow me!"(w)

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(x) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?")(y) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?"

22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return,(z) what is that to you? You must follow me."(aa) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(ab) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(ac) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(ad)

25 Jesus did many other things as well.(ae) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
