1 Kings 9

Chapter 9

The Lord Appears to Solomon(a)

1 When Solomon had finished(b) building the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had desired to do, 2 the Lord appeared(c) to him a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 The Lord said to him:

"I have heard(d) the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name(e) there forever. My eyes(f) and my heart will always be there.

4 "As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart(g) and uprightness, as David(h) your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws,(i) 5 I will establish(j) your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail(k) to have a successor on the throne of Israel.'

6 "But if you[a] or your descendants turn away(l) from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you[b] and go off to serve other gods(m) and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land(n) I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name.(o) Israel will then become a byword(p) and an object of ridicule(q) among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All[c] who pass by will be appalled(r) and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?'(s) 9 People will answer,(t) ‘Because they have forsaken(u) the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster(v) on them.'"

Solomon's Other Activities(w)

10 At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built these two buildings—the temple of the Lord and the royal palace— 11 King Solomon gave twenty towns in Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, because Hiram had supplied him with all the cedar and juniper and gold(x) he wanted. 12 But when Hiram went from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. 13 "What kind of towns are these you have given me, my brother?" he asked. And he called them the Land of Kabul,[d](y) a name they have to this day. 14 Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents[e] of gold.(z)

15 Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted(aa) to build the Lord 's temple, his own palace, the terraces,[f](ab) the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor,(ac) Megiddo and Gezer.(ad) 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter,(ae) Solomon's wife. 17 And Solomon rebuilt Gezer.) He built up Lower Beth Horon,(af) 18 Baalath,(ag) and Tadmor[g] in the desert, within his land, 19 as well as all his store cities(ah) and the towns for his chariots(ai) and for his horses[h]—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.

20 There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites,(aj) Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites(ak) (these peoples were not Israelites). 21 Solomon conscripted the descendants(al) of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate[i](am)—to serve as slave labor,(an) as it is to this day. 22 But Solomon did not make slaves(ao) of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers. 23 They were also the chief officials(ap) in charge of Solomon's projects—550 officials supervising those who did the work.

24 After Pharaoh's daughter(aq) had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces.(ar)

25 Three(as) times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord , burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.

26 King Solomon also built ships(at) at Ezion Geber,(au) which is near Elath(av) in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.[j] 27 And Hiram sent his men—sailors(aw) who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon's men. 28 They sailed to Ophir(ax) and brought back 420 talents[k] of gold,(ay) which they delivered to King Solomon.

Hosea 11:1-11

Chapter 11

God's Love for Israel

1 "When Israel was a child,(a) I loved(b) him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.(c)
2 But the more they were called,
the more they went away from me.[a](d)
They sacrificed to the Baals(e)
and they burned incense to images.(f)
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
     taking them by the arms;(g)
but they did not realize
it was I who healed(h) them.
4 I led them with cords of human kindness,
     with ties of love.(i)
To them I was like one who lifts
a little child to the cheek,
     and I bent down to feed(j) them.(k)

5 "Will they not return to Egypt(l)
and will not Assyria(m) rule over them
     because they refuse to repent?(n)
6 A sword(o) will flash in their cities;
it will devour(p) their false prophets
and put an end to their plans.
7 My people are determined to turn(q) from me.(r)
Even though they call me God Most High,
I will by no means exalt them.

8 "How can I give you up,(s) Ephraim?(t)
How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I treat you like Admah?
How can I make you like Zeboyim?(u)
My heart is changed within me;
     all my compassion(v) is aroused.(w)
9 I will not carry out my fierce anger,(x)
nor will I devastate(y) Ephraim again.
For I am God, and not a man(z)
     the Holy One(aa) among you.
I will not come against their cities.
10 They will follow the Lord ;
     he will roar(ab) like a lion.(ac)
When he roars,
his children will come trembling(ad) from the west.(ae)
11 They will come from Egypt,
     trembling like sparrows,
     from Assyria,(af) fluttering like doves.(ag)
I will settle them in their homes,"(ah)
     declares the Lord .

Mark 14:32-72

Chapter 14

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James and John(ad) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,"(ae) he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(af) might pass from him. 36 "Abba,[f] Father,"(ag) he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup(ah) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."(ai)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(aj) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."(ak)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(al) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus Arrested(am)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(an) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!"(ao) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 "Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(ap) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."(aq) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(ar)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(as)(at)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(au) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(av)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(aw) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 "We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(ax) not made with hands.'" 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(ay)

Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"(az)

62 "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."(ba)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(bb) "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked. 64 "You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?"

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(bc) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him.(bd)

Peter Disowns Jesus(be)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(bf) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(bg) she looked closely at him.

"You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,"(bh) she said.

68 But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about,"(bi) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." 70 Again he denied it.(bj)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."(bk)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about."(bl)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times."(bm) And he broke down and wept.
