Joshua 5:2-6:27
Chapter 5
Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, "Make flint knives(c) and circumcise(d) the Israelites again." 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]
4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(e)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(f) 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(g) forty years(h) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord . For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(i) a land flowing with milk and honey.(j) 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(k)
9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the place has been called Gilgal[c](l) to this day.
10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(m) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(n) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(o) unleavened bread(p) and roasted grain.(q) 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(r)
The Fall of Jericho
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(s) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(t) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
14 "Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown(u) to the ground(v) in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?"
15 The commander of the Lord 's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy."(w) And Joshua did so.
Chapter 6
1 Now the gates of Jericho(a) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered(b) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns(c) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(d) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(e) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(f) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in."
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it."(g) 7 And he ordered the army, "Advance(h)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(i) of the Lord ."
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord 's covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(j) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, "Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(k)" 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord . 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord , while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(l) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, "Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(m) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a](n) to the Lord . Only Rahab the prostitute(o) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(p) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(q) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(r) and bring trouble(s) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(t) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury."
20 When the trumpets sounded,(u) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(v) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(w) 21 They devoted(x) the city to the Lord and destroyed(y) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men(z) who had spied out(aa) the land, "Go into the prostitute's house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(ab)" 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(ac) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city(ad) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(ae) into the treasury of the Lord 's house.(af) 25 But Joshua spared(ag) Rahab the prostitute,(ah) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(ai)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(aj) "Cursed(ak) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
"At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates."(al)
27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(am) and his fame spread(an) throughout the land.
Job 23
Chapter 23
Job
1 Then Job replied:
2 "Even today my complaint(a) is bitter;(b)
his hand[a] is heavy in spite of[b] my groaning.(c)
3 If only I knew where to find him;
if only I could go to his dwelling!(d)
4 I would state my case(e) before him
and fill my mouth with arguments.(f)
5 I would find out what he would answer me,(g)
and consider what he would say to me.
6 Would he vigorously oppose me?(h)
No, he would not press charges against me.(i)
7 There the upright(j) can establish their innocence before him,(k)
and there I would be delivered forever from my judge.(l)
8 "But if I go to the east, he is not there;
if I go to the west, I do not find him.
9 When he is at work in the north, I do not see him;
when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.(m)
10 But he knows the way that I take;(n)
when he has tested me,(o) I will come forth as gold.(p)
11 My feet have closely followed his steps;(q)
I have kept to his way without turning aside.(r)
12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips;(s)
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.(t)
13 "But he stands alone, and who can oppose him?(u)
He does whatever he pleases.(v)
14 He carries out his decree against me,
and many such plans he still has in store.(w)
15 That is why I am terrified before him;(x)
when I think of all this, I fear him.(y)
16 God has made my heart faint;(z)
the Almighty(aa) has terrified me.(ab)
17 Yet I am not silenced by the darkness,(ac)
by the thick darkness that covers my face.
Acts 9:26-43
Chapter 9
26 When he came to Jerusalem,(ai) he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas(aj) took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him,(ak) and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.(al) 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews,[a](am) but they tried to kill him.(an) 30 When the believers(ao) learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea(ap) and sent him off to Tarsus.(aq)
31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria(ar) enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.(as)
Aeneas and Dorcas
32 As Peter traveled about the country, he went to visit the Lord's people(at) who lived in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who was paralyzed and had been bedridden for eight years. 34 "Aeneas," Peter said to him, "Jesus Christ heals you.(au) Get up and roll up your mat." Immediately Aeneas got up. 35 All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon(av) saw him and turned to the Lord.(aw)
36 In Joppa(ax) there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good(ay) and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room.(az) 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples(ba) heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, "Please come at once!"
39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows(bb) stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
40 Peter sent them all out of the room;(bc) then he got down on his knees(bd) and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, "Tabitha, get up."(be) She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. 41 He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.(bf) 43 Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon.(bg)
