Numbers 5-6

Chapter 5

The Purity of the Camp

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease[a](a) or a discharge(b) of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean(c) because of a dead body.(d) 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.(e)" 4 The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

Restitution for Wrongs

5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 "Say to the Israelites: ‘Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way[b] and so is unfaithful(f) to the Lord is guilty(g) 7 and must confess(h) the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution(i) for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8 But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram(j) with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer.(k) 9 All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him.(l) 10 Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.(m)'"

The Test for an Unfaithful Wife

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man's wife goes astray(n) and is unfaithful to him 13 so that another man has sexual relations with her,(o) and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14 and if feelings of jealousy(p) come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure— 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah[c](q) of barley flour(r) on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy,(s) a reminder-offering(t) to draw attention to wrongdoing.

16 "‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord . 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord , he shall loosen her hair(u) and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy,(v) while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.(w) 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray(x) and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse(y) not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray(z) while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband"— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse(aa)—"may the Lord cause you to become a curse[d] among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22 May this water(ab) that brings a curse(ac) enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries."

"‘Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it.(ad)"

23 "‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll(ae) and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25 The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord (af) and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial[e] offering(ag) and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse.(ah) 28 If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.

29 "‘This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray(ai) and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30 or when feelings of jealousy(aj) come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences(ak) of her sin.'"

Chapter 6

The Nazirite

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man or woman wants to make a special vow(a), a vow of dedication(b) to the Lord as a Nazirite,(c) 3 they must abstain from wine(d) and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar(e) made from wine or other fermented drink. They must not drink grape juice or eat grapes(f) or raisins. 4 As long as they remain under their Nazirite vow, they must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, not even the seeds or skins.

5 "‘During the entire period of their Nazirite vow, no razor(g) may be used on their head.(h) They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long.

6 "‘Throughout the period of their dedication to the Lord , the Nazirite must not go near a dead body.(i) 7 Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean(j) on account of them, because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head. 8 Throughout the period of their dedication, they are consecrated to the Lord .

9 "‘If someone dies suddenly in the Nazirite's presence, thus defiling the hair that symbolizes their dedication,(k) they must shave their head on the seventh day—the day of their cleansing.(l) 10 Then on the eighth day(m) they must bring two doves or two young pigeons(n) to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting.(o) 11 The priest is to offer one as a sin offering[a](p) and the other as a burnt offering(q) to make atonement(r) for the Nazirite because they sinned by being in the presence of the dead body. That same day they are to consecrate their head again. 12 They must rededicate themselves to the Lord for the same period of dedication and must bring a year-old male lamb(s) as a guilt offering.(t) The previous days do not count, because they became defiled during their period of dedication.

13 "‘Now this is the law of the Nazirite when the period of their dedication is over.(u) They are to be brought to the entrance to the tent of meeting.(v) 14 There they are to present their offerings to the Lord : a year-old male lamb without defect(w) for a burnt offering, a year-old ewe lamb without defect for a sin offering,(x) a ram(y) without defect for a fellowship offering,(z) 15 together with their grain offerings(aa) and drink offerings,(ab) and a basket of bread made with the finest flour and without yeast—thick loaves with olive oil mixed in, and thin loaves brushed with olive oil.(ac)

16 "‘The priest is to present all these(ad) before the Lord (ae) and make the sin offering and the burnt offering.(af) 17 He is to present the basket of unleavened bread and is to sacrifice the ram as a fellowship offering(ag) to the Lord , together with its grain offering(ah) and drink offering.(ai)

18 "‘Then at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the Nazirite must shave off the hair that symbolizes their dedication.(aj) They are to take the hair and put it in the fire that is under the sacrifice of the fellowship offering.

19 "‘After the Nazirite has shaved off the hair that symbolizes their dedication, the priest is to place in their hands a boiled shoulder of the ram, and one thick loaf and one thin loaf from the basket, both made without yeast.(ak) 20 The priest shall then wave these before the Lord as a wave offering;(al) they are holy(am) and belong to the priest, together with the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented.(an) After that, the Nazirite may drink wine.(ao)

21 "‘This is the law of the Nazirite(ap) who vows offerings to the Lord in accordance with their dedication, in addition to whatever else they can afford. They must fulfill the vows(aq) they have made, according to the law of the Nazirite.'"

The Priestly Blessing

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 "Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless(ar) the Israelites. Say to them:

24 "‘"The Lord bless you(as)
     and keep you;(at)
25 the Lord make his face shine on you(au)
     and be gracious to you;(av)
26 the Lord turn his face(aw) toward you
     and give you peace.(ax)"'

27 "So they will put my name(ay) on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

Ecclesiastes 5

Chapter 5

Fulfill Your Vow to God

1 [a]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

2 Do not be quick with your mouth,
     do not be hasty in your heart
     to utter anything before God.(a)
God is in heaven
     and you are on earth,
     so let your words be few.(b)
3 A dream(c) comes when there are many cares,
     and many words mark the speech of a fool.(d)

4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(e) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(f) 5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(g) 6 Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, "My vow was a mistake." Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? 7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(h)

Riches Are Meaningless

8 If you see the poor oppressed(i) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. 9 The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.

10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
     whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
     This too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,
     so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
     except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
     whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
     permits them no sleep.(j)

13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(k)

wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14       or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
     there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother's womb,
     and as everyone comes, so they depart.(l)
They take nothing from their toil(m)
     that they can carry in their hands.(n)

16 This too is a grievous evil:

As everyone comes, so they depart,
     and what do they gain,
     since they toil for the wind?(o)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
     with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(p) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(q) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(r) and the ability to enjoy them,(s) to accept their lot(t) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(u) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(v)

Matthew 18:1-20

Chapter 18

The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven(a)

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,(b) you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.(c) 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.(d) 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.(e)

Causing to Stumble

6 "If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.(f) 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!(g) 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble,(h) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(i) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.(j)

The Parable of the Wandering Sheep(k)

10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels(l) in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. [11] [a]

12 "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

Dealing With Sin in the Church

15 "If your brother or sister[b] sins,[c] go and point out their fault,(m) just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.'[d](n) 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church;(o) and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.(p)

18 "Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[e] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[f] loosed in heaven.(q)

19 "Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them(r) by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."(s)
