Exodus 15

Chapter 15

The Song of Moses and Miriam

1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song(a) to the Lord :

"I will sing(b) to the Lord ,
     for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(c)
he has hurled into the sea.(d)

2 "The Lord is my strength(e) and my defense[a];
     he has become my salvation.(f)
He is my God,(g) and I will praise him,
my father's God, and I will exalt(h) him.
3 The Lord is a warrior;(i)
     the Lord is his name.(j)
4 Pharaoh's chariots and his army(k)
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh's officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
5 The deep waters(l) have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(m)
6 Your right hand,(n) Lord ,
     was majestic in power.
Your right hand,(o) Lord ,
     shattered(p) the enemy.

7 "In the greatness of your majesty(q)
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;(r)
     it consumed(s) them like stubble.
8 By the blast of your nostrils(t)
     the waters piled up.(u)
The surging waters stood up like a wall;(v)
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.(w)
9 The enemy boasted,
     ‘I will pursue,(x) I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;(y)
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.'
10 But you blew with your breath,(z)
     and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
     in the mighty waters.(aa)
11 Who among the gods
     is like you,(ab) Lord ?
Who is like you—
     majestic in holiness,(ac)
awesome in glory,(ad)
     working wonders?(ae)

12 "You stretch out(af) your right hand,
and the earth swallows your enemies.(ag)
13 In your unfailing love you will lead(ah)
     the people you have redeemed.(ai)
In your strength you will guide them
     to your holy dwelling.(aj)
14 The nations will hear and tremble;(ak)
anguish(al) will grip the people of Philistia.(am)
15 The chiefs(an) of Edom(ao) will be terrified,
the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,(ap)
the people[c] of Canaan will melt(aq) away;
16       terror(ar) and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
they will be as still as a stone(as)
until your people pass by, Lord ,
until the people you bought[d](at) pass by.(au)
17 You will bring(av) them in and plant(aw) them
on the mountain(ax) of your inheritance—
the place, Lord , you made for your dwelling,(ay)
the sanctuary,(az) Lord, your hands established.

18 "The Lord reigns
     for ever and ever."(ba)

19 When Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea,(bb) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.(bc) 20 Then Miriam(bd) the prophet,(be) Aaron's sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels(bf) and dancing.(bg) 21 Miriam sang(bh) to them:

"Sing to the Lord ,
     for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(bi)
he has hurled into the sea."(bj)

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert(bk) of Shur.(bl) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.(bm) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[f](bn)) 24 So the people grumbled(bo) against Moses, saying, "What are we to drink?"(bp)

25 Then Moses cried out(bq) to the Lord , and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(br) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(bs) 26 He said, "If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep(bt) all his decrees,(bu) I will not bring on you any of the diseases(bv) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord , who heals(bw) you."

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped(bx) there near the water.

Proverbs 6:1-7:5

Chapter 6

Warnings Against Folly

1 My son,(a) if you have put up security(b) for your neighbor,(c)
if you have shaken hands in pledge(d) for a stranger,
2 you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
and give your neighbor no rest!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
     no slumber to your eyelids.(e)
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle(f) from the hand of the hunter,(g)
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.(h)

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;(i)
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
     no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer(j)
and gathers its food at harvest.(k)

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?(l)
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest(m)
11 and poverty(n) will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.

12 A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13       who winks maliciously with his eye,(o)
     signals with his feet
     and motions with his fingers,(p)
14       who plots evil(q) with deceit in his heart—
     he always stirs up conflict.(r)
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;(s)
     he will suddenly(t) be destroyed—without remedy.(u)

16 There are six things the Lord hates,(v)
seven that are detestable to him:
17           haughty eyes,(w)
         a lying tongue,(x)
         hands that shed innocent blood,(y)
18           a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,(z)
19           a false witness(aa) who pours out lies(ab)
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.(ac)

Warning Against Adultery

20 My son,(ad) keep your father's command
and do not forsake your mother's teaching.(ae)
21 Bind them always on your heart;
     fasten them around your neck.(af)
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
     when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp,
     this teaching is a light,(ag)
and correction and instruction
     are the way to life,(ah)
24 keeping you from your neighbor's wife,
from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.(ai)

25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes.

26 For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
but another man's wife preys on your very life.(aj)
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
     without his clothes being burned?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals
     without his feet being scorched?
29 So is he who sleeps(ak) with another man's wife;(al)
no one who touches her will go unpunished.

30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,(am)
though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32 But a man who commits adultery(an) has no sense;(ao)
     whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never(ap) be wiped away.

34 For jealousy(aq) arouses a husband's fury,(ar)
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not accept any compensation;
he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.(as)

Chapter 7

Warning Against the Adulterous Woman

1 My son,(a) keep my words
and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and you will live;(b)
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.(c)
4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,"
and to insight, "You are my relative."
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words.(d)

Hebrews 11:23-40

Chapter 11

23 By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born,(ao) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.(ap)

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.(aq) 25 He chose to be mistreated(ar) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace(as) for the sake of Christ(at) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.(au) 27 By faith he left Egypt,(av) not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer(aw) of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.(ax)

29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.(ay)

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.(az)

31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.[d](ba)

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(bb) Barak,(bc) Samson(bd) and Jephthah,(be) about David(bf) and Samuel(bg) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(bh) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(bi) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(bj) and escaped the edge of the sword;(bk) whose weakness was turned to strength;(bl) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(bm) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(bn) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(bo) and even chains and imprisonment.(bp) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[e](bq) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(br) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(bs) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(bt) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(bu) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(bv) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(bw) would they be made perfect.(bx)
