Genesis 17

Chapter 17

The Covenant of Circumcision

1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,(a) the Lord appeared to him(b) and said, "I am God Almighty[a];(c) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(d) 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you(e) and will greatly increase your numbers."(f)

3 Abram fell facedown,(g) and God said to him, 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you:(h) You will be the father of many nations.(i) 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c](j) for I have made you a father of many nations.(k) 6 I will make you very fruitful;(l) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.(m) 7 I will establish my covenant(n) as an everlasting covenant(o) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(p) and the God of your descendants after you.(q) 8 The whole land of Canaan,(r) where you now reside as a foreigner,(s) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(t) and I will be their God.(u)"

9 Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant,(v) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(w) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(x) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(y) and it will be the sign of the covenant(z) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(aa) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(ab) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(ac) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(ad) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(ae) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(af) he has broken my covenant.(ag)"

15 God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai(ah) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.(ai) 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.(aj) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;(ak) kings of peoples will come from her."

17 Abraham fell facedown;(al) he laughed(am) and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?(an) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?"(ao) 18 And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael(ap) might live under your blessing!"(aq)

19 Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,(ar) and you will call him Isaac.[d](as) I will establish my covenant with him(at) as an everlasting covenant(au) for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.(av) He will be the father of twelve rulers,(aw) and I will make him into a great nation.(ax) 21 But my covenant(ay) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you(az) by this time next year."(ba) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.(bb)

23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household(bc) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.(bd) 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old(be) when he was circumcised,(bf) 25 and his son Ishmael(bg) was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham's household(bh), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

Psalms 10

Chapter 10

Psalm 10[a]

1 Why, Lord , do you stand far off?(a)
     Why do you hide yourself(b) in times of trouble?

2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,(c)
     who are caught in the schemes he devises.
3 He boasts(d) about the cravings of his heart;
     he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord .(e)
4 In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
     in all his thoughts there is no room for God.(f)
5 His ways are always prosperous;
     your laws are rejected by[b] him;
     he sneers at all his enemies.
6 He says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me."
     He swears, "No one will ever do me harm."(g)

7 His mouth is full(h) of lies and threats;(i)
     trouble and evil are under his tongue.(j)
8 He lies in wait(k) near the villages;
     from ambush he murders the innocent.(l)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
9       like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;(m)
     he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.(n)
10 His victims are crushed,(o) they collapse;
     they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, "God will never notice;(p)
     he covers his face and never sees."(q)

12 Arise,(r) Lord ! Lift up your hand,(s) O God.
     Do not forget the helpless.(t)
13 Why does the wicked man revile God?(u)
     Why does he say to himself,
     "He won't call me to account"?(v)
14 But you, God, see the trouble(w) of the afflicted;
     you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;(x)
     you are the helper(y) of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man;(z)
     call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
     that would not otherwise be found out.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever;(aa)
     the nations(ab) will perish from his land.
17 You, Lord , hear the desire of the afflicted;(ac)
     you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,(ad)
18 defending the fatherless(ae) and the oppressed,(af)
     so that mere earthly mortals
     will never again strike terror.

Luke 10:1-20

Chapter 10

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(a)(b)(c)

1 After this the Lord(d) appointed seventy-two[a] others(e) and sent them two by two(f) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(g) 2 He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(h) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(i) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 "When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.' 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(j) Do not move around from house to house.

8 "When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(k) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(l) has come near to you.' 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(m) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.'(n) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(o) than for that town.(p)

13 "Woe to you,(q) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth(r) and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(s) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[b]

16 "Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me."(t)

17 The seventy-two(u) returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."(v)

18 He replied, "I saw Satan(w) fall like lightning from heaven.(x) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(y) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."(z)
