Psalms 89

Chapter 89

Psalm 89[a]

A maskil[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1 I will sing(a) of the Lord 's great love forever;
     with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known(b)
     through all generations.
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
     that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(c)
3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
     I have sworn to David my servant,
4 ‘I will establish your line forever
     and make your throne firm through all generations.'"[c](d)

5 The heavens(e) praise your wonders, Lord ,
     your faithfulness too, in the assembly(f) of the holy ones.
6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord ?
     Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(g)
7 In the council(h) of the holy ones(i) God is greatly feared;
     he is more awesome than all who surround him.(j)
8 Who is like you,(k) Lord God Almighty?(l)
     You, Lord , are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

9 You rule over the surging sea;
     when its waves mount up, you still them.(m)
10 You crushed Rahab(n) like one of the slain;
     with your strong arm you scattered(o) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(p) and yours also the earth;(q)
     you founded the world and all that is in it.(r)
12 You created the north and the south;
     Tabor(s) and Hermon(t) sing for joy(u) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
     your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(v)

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(w)
     love and faithfulness go before you.(x)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
     who walk(y) in the light(z) of your presence, Lord .
16 They rejoice in your name(aa) all day long;
     they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(ab)
     and by your favor you exalt our horn.[d](ac)
18 Indeed, our shield[e](ad) belongs to the Lord ,
     our king(ae) to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
     to your faithful people you said:
"I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
     I have raised up a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David(af) my servant;(ag)
     with my sacred oil(ah) I have anointed(ai) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
     surely my arm will strengthen him.(aj)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(ak)
     the wicked will not oppress(al) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(am)
     and strike down his adversaries.(an)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(ao)
     and through my name his horn[f] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,
     his right hand over the rivers.(ap)
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,(aq)
     my God, the Rock(ar) my Savior.'(as)
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,(at)
     the most exalted(au) of the kings(av) of the earth.
28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
     and my covenant with him will never fail.(aw)
29 I will establish his line forever,
     his throne as long as the heavens endure.(ax)

30 "If his sons forsake my law
     and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
     and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
     their iniquity with flogging;(ay)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(az)
     nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
     or alter what my lips have uttered.(ba)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
     and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
     and his throne endure before me like the sun;(bb)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
     the faithful witness in the sky."(bc)

38 But you have rejected,(bd) you have spurned,
     you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
     and have defiled his crown in the dust.(be)
40 You have broken through all his walls(bf)
     and reduced his strongholds(bg) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(bh) him;
     he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(bi)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
     you have made all his enemies rejoice.(bj)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
     and have not supported him in battle.(bk)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
     and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(bl) the days of his youth;
     you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(bm)

46 How long, Lord ? Will you hide yourself forever?
     How long will your wrath burn like fire?(bn)
47 Remember how fleeting is my life.(bo)
     For what futility you have created all humanity!
48 Who can live and not see death,
     or who can escape the power of the grave?(bp)
49 Lord, where is your former great love,
     which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has[g] been mocked,(bq)
     how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord , have mocked,
     with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.(br)

52 Praise be to the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.(bs)

     his marvelous deeds(g) among all peoples.

4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(h)
     he is to be feared(i) above all gods.(j)
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,(k)
     but the Lord made the heavens.(l)
6 Splendor and majesty(m) are before him;
     strength and glory(n) are in his sanctuary.

7 Ascribe to the Lord ,(o) all you families of nations,(p)

     The world is firmly established,(x) it cannot be moved;(y)
     he will judge(z) the peoples with equity.(aa)

11 Let the heavens rejoice,(ab) let the earth be glad;(ac)
     let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
     let all the trees of the forest(ad) sing for joy.(ae)
13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord , for he comes,
     he comes to judge(af) the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness(ag)
     and the peoples in his faithfulness.(ah)

Psalms 101

Chapter 101

Psalm 101

Of David. A psalm.

1 I will sing of your love(a) and justice;
     to you, Lord , I will sing praise.
2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life(b)
     when will you come to me?

I will conduct the affairs(c) of my house
     with a blameless heart.
3 I will not look with approval
     on anything that is vile.(d)

I hate what faithless people do;(e)
     I will have no part in it.
4 The perverse of heart(f) shall be far from me;
     I will have nothing to do with what is evil.

5 Whoever slanders their neighbor(g) in secret,
     I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes(h) and a proud heart,
     I will not tolerate.

6 My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
     that they may dwell with me;
the one whose walk is blameless(i)
     will minister to me.

7 No one who practices deceit
     will dwell in my house;
no one who speaks falsely
     will stand in my presence.

8 Every morning(j) I will put to silence
     all the wicked(k) in the land;
I will cut off every evildoer(l)
     from the city of the Lord .(m)

Psalms 105

Chapter 105

Psalm 105(a)

1 Give praise to the Lord ,(b) proclaim his name;(c)
     make known among the nations what he has done.
2 Sing to him,(d) sing praise to him;(e)
     tell of all his wonderful acts.(f)
3 Glory in his holy name;(g)
     let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Look to the Lord and his strength;
     seek his face(h) always.

5 Remember the wonders(i) he has done,
     his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,(j)
6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham,(k)
     his chosen(l) ones, the children of Jacob.
7 He is the Lord our God;
     his judgments are in all the earth.

8 He remembers his covenant(m) forever,
     the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
9 the covenant he made with Abraham,(n)
     the oath he swore to Isaac.
10 He confirmed it(o) to Jacob as a decree,
     to Israel as an everlasting covenant:(p)
11 "To you I will give the land of Canaan(q)
     as the portion you will inherit."(r)

12 When they were but few in number,(s)
     few indeed, and strangers in it,(t)
13 they wandered from nation to nation,(u)
     from one kingdom to another.
14 He allowed no one to oppress(v) them;
     for their sake he rebuked kings:(w)
15 "Do not touch(x) my anointed ones;
     do my prophets(y) no harm."

16 He called down famine(z) on the land
     and destroyed all their supplies of food;
17 and he sent a man before them—
     Joseph, sold as a slave.(aa)
18 They bruised his feet with shackles,(ab)
     his neck was put in irons,
19 till what he foretold(ac) came to pass,
     till the word(ad) of the Lord proved him true.
20 The king sent and released him,
     the ruler of peoples set him free.(ae)
21 He made him master of his household,
     ruler over all he possessed,
22 to instruct his princes(af) as he pleased
     and teach his elders wisdom.(ag)

23 Then Israel entered Egypt;(ah)
     Jacob resided(ai) as a foreigner in the land of Ham.(aj)
24 The Lord made his people very fruitful;
     he made them too numerous(ak) for their foes,
25 whose hearts he turned(al) to hate his people,
     to conspire(am) against his servants.
26 He sent Moses(an) his servant,
     and Aaron,(ao) whom he had chosen.(ap)
27 They performed(aq) his signs(ar) among them,
     his wonders(as) in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness(at) and made the land dark—
     for had they not rebelled against(au) his words?
29 He turned their waters into blood,(av)
     causing their fish to die.(aw)
30 Their land teemed with frogs,(ax)
     which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.
31 He spoke,(ay) and there came swarms of flies,(az)
     and gnats(ba) throughout their country.
32 He turned their rain into hail,(bb)
     with lightning throughout their land;
33 he struck down their vines(bc) and fig trees(bd)
     and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke,(be) and the locusts came,(bf)
     grasshoppers(bg) without number;(bh)
35 they ate up every green thing in their land,
     ate up the produce of their soil.
36 Then he struck down all the firstborn(bi) in their land,
     the firstfruits of all their manhood.
37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,(bj)
     and from among their tribes no one faltered.
38 Egypt was glad when they left,
     because dread of Israel(bk) had fallen on them.

39 He spread out a cloud(bl) as a covering,
     and a fire to give light at night.(bm)
40 They asked,(bn) and he brought them quail;(bo)
     he fed them well with the bread of heaven.(bp)
41 He opened the rock,(bq) and water gushed out;
     it flowed like a river in the desert.

42 For he remembered his holy promise(br)
     given to his servant Abraham.
43 He brought out his people with rejoicing,(bs)
     his chosen ones with shouts of joy;
44 he gave them the lands of the nations,(bt)
     and they fell heir to what others had toiled(bu) for—
45 that they might keep his precepts
     and observe his laws.(bv)

Praise the Lord .[a](bw)

Psalms 132

Chapter 132

Psalm 132(a)

A song of ascents.

1  Lord , remember David
     and all his self-denial.(b)

2 He swore an oath to the Lord ,
     he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(c)
3 "I will not enter my house(d)
     or go to my bed,
4 I will allow no sleep to my eyes
     or slumber to my eyelids,
5 till I find a place(e) for the Lord ,
     a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."

6 We heard it in Ephrathah,(f)
     we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[a](g)
7 "Let us go to his dwelling place,(h)
     let us worship at his footstool,(i) saying,
8 ‘Arise, Lord ,(j) and come to your resting place,
     you and the ark of your might.
9 May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(k)
     may your faithful people(l) sing for joy.'"

10 For the sake of your servant David,
     do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(m)
     a sure oath he will not revoke:
"One of your own descendants(n)
     I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(o)
     and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
     on your throne(p) for ever and ever."

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(q)
     he has desired it for his dwelling,(r) saying,
14 "This is my resting place for ever and ever;(s)
     here I will sit enthroned,(t) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
     her poor I will satisfy with food.(u)
16 I will clothe her priests(v) with salvation,
     and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(w)

17 "Here I will make a horn[b] grow(x) for David
     and set up a lamp(y) for my anointed one.(z)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(aa)
     but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown."(ab)
