Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֶשְׁכֹּל Pl. אֶשְׁכְּלוֹת and אַשְׁכְּלוֹת (as if from אֶשְׁכֹּלֶת, comp. אַרְמוֹן), m. Numbers 13:23.

(1) a cluster, Traubenkamm [“prop. the stem or stalk of a cluster; Lat. racemus.”], whence berries, or flowers, which hang in clusters like grapes; as of dates, Song of Solomon 7:8 of flowers of the henna, Song of Solomon 1:14 especially of the vine, either with the addition of הַגֶּפֶן Song of Solomon 7:9, עֳנָבִים Numbers 13:23, 24 Numbers 13:24 or absol. Isaiah 65:8; Micah 7:1. Once, Genesis 40:10, אֶשְׁכֹּל is distinguished from עֵנָב grape, and denotes the stem, racemus, pr. so called. The words הִבְשִׁילוּ אַשְׁכְּלוֹתֶיהָ עֲנָבִים should be rendered “and its (the vine’s) stems (racemes) brought forth grapes.” Germ. die Rebenkämme trieben reife Trauben od. reife Beeren. To this answers the Arab. إِثْكاَلُ, عِثْكاَلُ palm branch; Eth. አስካል፡ grape, vine; whence the verb ሰከለ፡ to bear grapes; Syr. and Ch. ܣܓܘܽܥܳ סְגוֹלָא grape, stem, cluster. In such a variety of orthography the etymology is doubtful. Perhaps אֶשְׁכֹּל may be for אֶשְׂכֹּל, from שָׂכַל, شكل to bind, to plait, as a plaiting, braid of grapes. Compare עֵנָב.

(2) [Eshcol], pr.n.

(a) of a valley abounding in vines in the southern part of the Holy Land, Numbers 13:23, 24 Numbers 13:24, 32:9 Deuteronomy 1:24.

(b) m. Genesis 14:13, 24 Genesis 14:24.
